Fluid chg in frnt/rear ends. 97 2500 4x4

Need to change the fluid in the front & rear differentials of my 97 2500 4x4 & am wondering what best brand/type of fluids to use. I live in Alaska so cold wx is a factor.

I would think a quality synthetic 75w90 would probably be the best choice for your location. Something like Royal Purple, Red Line, Amsoil, or even Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Synthetic would probably be good choices. I have ran all of them with good results... I have ran most of them in my 04. 5 for reference.

Mobil 1 Synthetic 75-90 gear oil in all Rams that I currently own or have had in the past.

No issues with it ever.

Change it every 50,000 miles.



Gets cold here too.



No noticeable drag from the drivetrain when starting out at -20 below zero.

To all who replied to my post concerning brand of oil to use in the front & rear differentials of my 97 2500, Thanks. I went w/ Mopar fluids, as I found I had a couple of qts from a garage sale purchase. Also discovered I have a leak from the pinion seal on the rear diff. Another project for the to do before winter list! Thanks again.

Dana axle

Ask the guys on TDR for some reference on the amount of fluid. Let someone older and wiser than me give you some feedback on that.



I've always filled it to the bottom of the fill hole, but I did some searching because I just changed my diff fluid and I ran across some info that said Dana recommends 3/4" below the fill hole.



I have a 97 4x4 and my manual called for 7. 6 pts for the front and it was filled to the hole with 7pts or pretty much level ground.
