So I finished coating my whole undercarriage in Fluid Film today in prep for Wisconsin salt season. This was the first time I used an air sprayer vs. the spray cans - much easier!!

Question for those that also use oil undercoating - Do you still rinse your frame after being exposed to salt? Any tips for making the coating last as long as possible?

Fluid Film recommends limiting your trips to the under body car wash to prevent washing off. After using their application the last two winters I understand why. Even the water spray from the tires from running down the road washes the stuff off. And it does it rather quickly.

For this reason I've been looking at different products. I thought I had a line on getting Krown but it seems to have fallen through.

If your driving regiment includes mostly low speed driving your probably fine with the Fluid Film but again I'd stay clear of the under body car wash.

I've heard Woolwax is decent stuff.

Not sure if anyone has tried that?

It’s been a year since my first application of fluid film down under. I feel it’s clung rather well. I was just under doing the starter and clutch hydraulics and I got slicked up pretty well.
Due to my current situation, I may not be able to get back under there to reapply before it’s too cold, but I feel I’ll be ok.
I do not use a under car car wash, other than what I can do at home.

I have been using the fluid film for two or three years now. I spray areas down at the car wash that were more susceptible to the salt spray. It was a matter of touching up some areas once in awhile.
I have not tried Woolwax.
I have tried another product called Corrosion X and Corrosion X HD. These are more expensive than Fluid Film but I like them better but use more sparingly because of the expense. The Corrosion X HD is much thicker than Fluid Film. I like the regular Corrosion X to spray on body ground connections or other electrical connections.

How did you apply the corrosion x? With the aresol cans? I like the looks of their product but the realllyy expensive application equipment kinda makes it a no go.

I reached out to Fluid Film before I started using it, and this is what I got.

“Hello Wayne,
NAS will work just as effectively to treat existing rust as Liquid A with
the only difference being it leaving a barrier on top to prevent further
corrosion. Our Liquid A is typically only used for marine environments in
inaccessible voids as it can be used as float coat to treat voids with its
thinner viscosity but does not last long in an exposed environment. NAS is
the same core product as our aerosol with the only difference being the
propellant in the can.
If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

So, the gallons and spray cans found at the chains, I got mine at Auto Zone, are NAS. I’m quite satisfied with it. 3 other guys at my job tried it as well, and they’re satisfied too.

An earlier email I found as well.

Hello Wayne,
Thank you for your interest in our products. We recommend using the NAS
formula for undercoating vehicles. It provides the perfect viscosity for
being able to be applied through an Airless paint sprayer or undercoating
gun where it is thin enough to creep and migrate (like Liquid A) yet thick
enough to hold up against roadspray (like AR). The product it atomized
through the application but bodies up once applied. Please see the link to a
tutorial on application below:

The NAS is the only product the stores carry around here. Being It's the product they push its probably a safe bet it's their best line.

Since my truck was already down and the weather is good this weekend I decided to do my annual undercoating. I've got almost a whole gallon of FF which is enough to do the whole truck.

I removed all the fender liners, the spare, and the tail lights and spent 2 hrs pressure washing the underside. Before I started washing I snapped a few pics of the underside to illustrate my experiences.
As you can see there's a good bit of FF remaining in the area above the spare. This is pretty typical in the high up places out of reach of any water wash off.

This is much lower on the frame and as you can see, bone dry. This part wouldn't be visible with the fender liner installed so it doesn't even see direct splash from the tires but definitely sees some type of spray. This is pretty typical within a few months of application over much of the truck.

So I ordered some Wool Wax after seeing some reviews of it resisting wash off better than Fluid Film. Turns out it's the same company (Kellsport Products).

This is the letter I got with my gallon of Woolwax.

$50 shipped. I found it a little cheaper but with longer shipping times and I wanted it here to do the other vehicles.

That's about the same price as I can get the NAS for local. Never seen the AR local to compare it price wise. Everyone carries the NAS which is a bit puzzling why they push one product over the other.

Time will tell.

Being near Canada, there's a company there that does the oil undercoating for me each year. If you must go thru a carwash, have them turn off the underbody flush. If they can't or won't, find another. The high pressure will remove all the stuff you put on, not to mention all the work you went thru putting it on.
