I will changing all fluids (except engine oil) on a Dodge '96 3500, 4WD, automatic trans. Engine oil was done about a week ago and it is the gas V-10. Can I assume that the fluid recommendations will be the same as if this truck were a diesel?

If so, can someone recommend what are the proper fluids or direct me to a good thread where I can find this information? The truck has only 60,000 miles but time dictates the new fluids. Not interested in synthetics, just regular stuff for:

*front & rear diffs

*X-fer case

*auto trans

Thank you,

-frank.

Check your owner's manual for recommended oil rating. Using diesel rated oil is Ok if the rating for gas engine is the recommended rating or higher.

For the others what ever brand you like as long as it meets recommended rating.

Unfortunatly, an owner's manual is not available (in the truck that is. ) I was hoping to get some info before trusting what the counter help at the auto store recommends. When I get the info, I may just head to Walmart and save a bit or two.

I know that the newer trucks are quite specific as to fluid recommedations, but I do not know if a truck this vintage can use just regular gear oil in the x-fer and diffs and plain ole' ATF for the transmission. I'll do some searching here. I would assume that the drive train components on the gasser would apply same as the diesel on a like truck?

fkovalski,

Front and rear diffs = 80w-90 gear lube

Transfer case= dex II or atf plus

trans =atf plus

From 96 service manual.

In 96 these were filled with synthetic from factory.

I always liked Castrol/ GTX for engine oil on my gassers 10w-30 during the cold months and 10w-40 warm months. I used to run 20w-50 down hear all year.
