I've run a strong mix of Castrol Super-Clean and water though for a couple minutes then flushed well with water with excellent results. Remove the thermostat first for better circulation.

I use pool chemicals to flush system that have heavy scale and rust. The chems are cheap and highly effective. For the cleaner:

PH-up - sodium bisulfate... 1lb for 5 gallons of water. For the neutralizer: PH-down sodium carbonate 1/4lb for 5 gallons of water.

Run the cleaner for 30 min ... . flush system. Run the neutralizer 30 min ... . flush system ... . I then clean the sytem with automatic dishwasher detergent (it's non-foaming) ... flush system and fill with your favorite coolant solution.

Keep in mind this procedure takes along time and should be used if you have heavy scale and rust.

You can clean an oil contaminated system using the diswasher soap ... It'll clean all the oil out.

So ... who's gonna tell me I'm an idiot??? HAHAHA

Life is good!

draining

How do you know if your are getting a total drain? with the thermo out and the pepcock open will this get a total drain? thanks for your input

Thanks for the tips, but is there any other places to drain the radiator or the block than the small plug on the bottom right side of the radiator there is a lot of oil it would take for ever to drain through that little hole. Also would all that oil make my thermosat not function right ?

I've heard that the dishwasher powder Cascade works the best. It is reported to cut the oil out with a powerful grease cutter without foaming.

I can't remember the name of it, but Fleetguard makes a heavy duty engine/radiator flush. Might want to check into it.

The thermostat will be fine.

Pull the lower radiator hose for faster draining.

Did you find and fix the source of the oil contamination?

Fleetguard has Restore and Restore Plus. It sounds as though Restore Plus is better suited for your heavy duty cleaning needs.

Restore is alkaline based, same as dishwasher soaps. The down side of automatic dishwashers soaps is they contain a very high amount of grit. That's how the dishwasher gets the food particles off your dishes. That grit is not good for the inside of your engine if it is left there.

Do not let your cooling system dry out unless all the scale and silicate gel is completely flushed. Once they dry out, it is nearly impossible to get them out even with repeated flushings of the system.
