Just Bought 93 Td, Have Few Questions

A good friend of mine has a '93 5 speed CTD that is making some funny noises. When he is fully loaded (around 18,000 GCVW) when he comes up on 1600 rpm slowly it hits about 13 psi of boost and all of a sudden the boost starts to fluctuate rapidly between 13-17 psi. You can hear it as a flutter from the exhaust. It doesn't do it when he's not loaded or when he's above 2000 rpm.

He thought it might be the wastegate so he took it apart and welded it open so it is acting like a non-wastegated turbo. It still makes the fluttering noise and boost fluctuation. The turbo appears to be in good shape, it doesn't leak oil and it spins smoothly on its shaft.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Jeremy

It sounds like separation of the compressor side of the housing. Phone Piers or Al at PDR and explain sound as they have run across this before and have a fix for it. PDR toll free 1-866-888-9396

sorry, I of course meant he welded the wastegate shut. So it acts similarly to a non waste gated turbo.

He was sort of wondering if it couldn't be some sort of a fuel delivery problem.

I'd lean more toward Marks thoughts on this. There are seals between each side of the turbo, drive side/driven side.

O-rings I believe. You may have a problem there as well.

Make a call and run it by Piers, that's what I'd do too. .

bob.

You need to get a later model H1C compressor housing with the relief veins, or upgrade to an H1C. Piers has these lying around, so he is a good one to call. I had the same problem.

Thanks for the help guys,

Piers hooked my friend up with a heckuva deal on a WH1C compressor (he had an H1C on the truck). This fixed his problem and the truck runs beautifully again.

I think maybe my truck does that also. When I am running 5th gear with about 14,000lbs behind the truck going about 60 and I come to a hill I get a fluttering type of noise I guess you could call it. It almost sound like an exhaust leak between the manifold and block, or I thought maybe its that rubber between the frame and the inner fender tapping on the air tubing. It only happens when I am heavy and the engine lugs up a hill at low rpm. Is this the same symtoms:( as yours?

What do I need to be looking at for turbo separation? It has been doing this for prolly a year or so. I ususally don't let it lug that low.

You guys will have to forgive me though. Can't give you rpms, boost numbers, or egt's:rolleyes: Don't have any gauges, just running by the seat of the pants:rolleyes: It has lived at its current fuel setting for about 4 years now and nothings melted off yet!:D

Its internal so you won't see anything by looking at it. Don't try opening the compressor housing unless you have half a day to try getting it back together. Have to have the right tools and know how. Phone Piers or Al at PDR at 1-866-888-9396 as they have a fix for it.
