Had a 200 mile drive today, and while out in no-where I dropped the hammer. Ran between 95-100mph for about 4 or 5 miles continuous... then backed off and set the cruise at 75-80. I looked at the temp guage a few minutes later and it was holding steady at 170!! And it stayed right there for the next 30 miles til I stopped for fuel. Even at stoplights thru town, the temp held at 170 until I shut the motor down at the fuel pump... when I continued my trip, it was back to normal up and down... any ideas?

Remove your fan if it bothers you, mine was just like yours until I removed the fan. If fan removal isn't for you just try to ignore the gauge, the cycling is normal and does no harm.

My 96 stopped gauge fluctuation with the following changes. Added the 'updated' thermostat. Worked for about 2 weeks then started fluctuating again. Erggg, frustating.

Changed to the Dexcool antifreeze and funny thing is, the gauge no longer fluctuates and the stock fan clutch does not engage as frequently. Temp gauge now runs 170-180 and that has been through Houston's +100 summer last year.
Before anyone flames me, I know about the letter regarding the Dexcool. I have been using is now for 75K and the truck runs better. Also investigated with both Texaco engineers and Cummins engineers regarding the use of the Dexcool.
Hell, the reason I lloked for something better was that the OE antifreeze was causing solder bloom on the end tanks of the radiator.
