Flying J diesel fuel question: Car & Truck fuel=same quality/fuel??

Can you push start a Diesel?

I have a dumb question...

Last night I fueled up at the Tacoma, WA Flying J. ($1. 25 a gallon!!)

I always get my diesel from the car pumps vs. the big rig pumps mainly because the truck pumps are so busy.

Is the diesel fuel from the car pumps any different in terms of quality etc. from the truck pumps? I don't want to be putting crap diesel in my truck.

The reason I ask is that on my receipt it says "car diesel".



Also, if there are any "Flying J" experts out there... . Do you know if they use the Flying J "Gold" diesel fuel in all of their pumps at all of their stations? I was reading about their fuel and how much better it is than regular diesel.

SCooke, I believe the diesel fuel comes from the same big tank under the ground, so I don't think it makes any difference if you fule up at the car or the semi pump as it all comes from the same place. I usaully try and fill up at the truck pumps if they are not busy if I am out of town though. As to your question about the Flying J "Gold" diesel fuel I have no idea, but you may want to check there website, www.flyingJ.com.
 
Here in Arizona, Flying J charges 9 cents more per gallon if you use the big-rig pumps. You can get them to take it back off if you sign a form saying you're not a commercial vehicle. I use the small pumps because they have a credit card reader on them and because the big pumps go so fast the foam builds up and shuts off the pump too soon.
 
I use the small pumps for the same reason as Todd. The Flying J Gold is supposed to be a "true" premium diesel with added lubricity and higher cetane. I don't think it is available at all Flying J's or at least I haven't seen it on the southern parts of I-75.
 
It acient history now, but in 1961 for a graduate class in economics, I did a paper on gasoline distribution in L. A. county.

There were 120+ brands of gasoline sold in the county, from 16 distributors, and it all came from 3 refineries. It was probable that some of the 16 distributors contributed some additives, but it was basically all the same stuff. It's likely some thing like that now.

It is my understanding Flying J Gold is available out of their Salt Lake City refinery, and they truck it and pipline it in the west. Most of the rest of the country F-J is supplied by Conoco. It all comes out of the same pipe line, same fuel, just different additives. Bottom line for diesel fuel, buy at a busy dealer who sell alot of fuel and you will rarely have a quality problem!

I fill up at the same Fife Flying J. The fuel is the same quality for both car and big rig pumps,but the only difference is,the big rig pumps have big filters attached to the pump hose and the car pumps don't. I usually fill at the big pump for just this reason.

Mike, the smaller pumps have filters also, they're inside the pump where you can't see them. They are smaller due to the lower flow rate.
 
I asked one time and they said the tax was the only difference between the big and little pumps (in AZ).



I stick to my local Flying J just for the quality. I filled up at a Circle K on 6/24 and received a mixture of gas and diesel (67th Ave and Happy Valley, for all you locals). Still have 10 gallons of the funky stuff to prove my case after my beast started sputtering... .

I just completed my 4th trip this year to the mid west. I always purchased my fuel at a Flying J. Found them to be clean to extra clean and neat. Point is, after checking mileage on every tank, I 've have the best mileage from fuel purchased at the Flying J's in GA. My opinion, the one at I - 75, exit 2 is by far the slowest for counter service.
 
I filled up a few days ago at the Flying J on I70, Limon, CO. It was 5 am, the truck pumps were very busy, so I used the car diesel pump. The pump said "gold" or something like that. There was no difference in price: truck and car was $1. 33. After I had cleaned my windshield, I realized that the pump was only on its 3rd gallon. I foolishly waited almost 30 minutes for it to put 20 gallons in my truck. Then, to make things worse, it didn't shut off, and diesel went all over the side of my turck and the ground. When I went inside to pay, all the cashier could say was "sorry". They even charged me for the fuel that spilled (ok, so it was only maybe a 1/2 gallon. ) When I was walking back to my truck, a PSD pulled behind me and I told him not to bother, just go wait in line with big boys. Oh well, that's life I guess.
