After 3000 miles on 2005 4 x 4 2500 6 speed work truck started to get alot of vibration and noise in drive train. Took it to dealer in nevada who informed me that it was a flywheel problem which dodge was working on. I called back over the next two months as noise continued to worsen and still no fix. Finally took into dealer in montana who pulled it apart luckily just prior to the 12,000 mile point when clutches are warranty. Discovered dual mass flywheel had come completely apart with clutch also very damaged. I am disgusted for two reasons. Every one is worrying about the six speed when this is really the worse problem and dodge is not doing crap all or admitting it to the dealerships that they have a problem because this is not the first one dealer has seen. Secondly what happens when it does it again now is it my nickel. This sucks :-{} :-{}

Uh oh, this ought to get the Naysayers all revved up about the G56 and DMF... :eek: Sorry to hear about your misfortune sir.

You might want to ask. Seems to me, that when you have something repaired, you get a 12month 12,000 mile warranty.

Check it out. Doesn't hurt to ask.

I had an 89 Ferd with the DM flywheel and had problems with vibration/noise but that was after 200K miles. 3K seems like a defect. Hope things turn out good for you. Let us know how things work out.

Flywheel is 7/70 if truck came with 7/70 powertrain if not its 3/36. Only CLUTCH DISC is 12/12 for wear! Dealer needs to read the FINE print in the policys and procedures manual.

I agree. If a 7/70 part fails causing the failure of a wear part like the clutch, I believe they are both covered. What are they going to do -- replace the flywheel and then put it back together, bad clutch and all, if you refuse to pay for a new clutch? Naah.

Yep they will. I use too! The DISC is not covered after 12/12 unless DSM approval. Say a rear main leaks at 50k or the pilot bushing goes out or flywheel. The DISC is NOT covered but those other parts are powertrain. Now if pilot bushing goes out and plate and disc are WORN out its benifical to the comsumer to replace those at parts only cost. No labor as they were removed to replace piot bearing. It is not ALWAYS simple trying to explain this to comsumers. Calipers are covered 3/36 but PADS are not even if the caliper failed if its past 12/12 and so on. THO some NEW calipers already came loaded with NEW PADS then of course pads were included. Go figure.

Well, well, well ... another bad G56.

That does not boad well for the new handshaker.

What does Southbend have that replaces the DMF? Has Peter devised something for the G56? If he has, this could be Southbends "meat-and-potatos" product.

I test-drove a G56 3500 DRW and it shifted fine (a little stiff ... but it had 25 miles on the truck), but I could see where trouble for these new 6-speeds will start to spring up in the near future based on the G56's hp/tq ratings from MB.

The Ford guys have had a DM flywheel for a few years and we have been offering a solid replacement for it and a upgraded clutch... . The upgraded clutch has a new disc that will absorb some of the torsional vibrations that the dual mass is taking care of... .

I'm guessing that this is a setup that we will see solid flywheels for down the road... . BTW, Ford dropped the dual mass because of the problems... . and is now telling customers that they will return to it once the problems are solved...

I've not personally seen the Dodge but the Ford unit has a group of plastic parts that hold most of it together... and with heat the plastic gives way and allows vibration and some slipping... . In some cases we've had customers call looking for a clutch and we tell them that the most common failure is the flywheel... they usually don't believe us until the parts are on the ground..... We've seen some city work trucks, that do city parks and such that stop and start 40 to 50 times a day with a different driver each week... and if they got 30K miles out of the stock flywheel they were doing good...

Lets hope they get the problems worked out.....

I don't think it would be wise to wait on them :rolleyes:

We have been working on this already and believe we have come up with a solid flywheel replacement. We've already torn into the g56 transmission and dual mass flywheel configuration. I spent a few days down at Blumenthanls Heavy Duty working on this very problem.

As for the dmf, Jim is correct, they have been out for quite a few years, as a matter of fact since 1987, but Valeo's design has proven to be a far superior design over Luk. By the way, Ford DOES use the dmf flywheel in the late model 6. 0 truck, however, it is used mainly in the F250 and 350s, but is an option to get the solid system. I have the part numbers if anyone needs them. Unfortunately for all with diesels, Luk is now the manufacturer of the clutch components for Ford, Dodge and Chevy and they have not quite figured out how to build a dmf. We had thought this design for the g56 looked a little bit beefier then the 6. 6 duramax and the 6. 0 Ford but, as we can see by the first post on this thread, it does not appear so. I will have some concrete answers in the near future for the conversion clutch sets. There will also be an up and coming article in the TDR magazine compairing all the of the Dodge cummins diesel transmissions starting with the getrag. We took the time to take pictures of exploded views of the getrag and the 4500, 5600 and the new g56.
