Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) flywheel questions please help

I am using a flywheel from an 01 with a nv4500 trans in my 97 v10 auto to cummins 5spd swap. the starter is crashing into the flywheel teeth from the looks of it. i have tried the starter from an auto cummins i had, and one for a 5 spd. neither work. i am starting to get fustrated and need help. are the flywheels for the later nv's bigger and and have more teeth? Thanks in advanced.

The '01 has a 13" clutch/flywheel, which relocates the ring gear as compared to the older trucks that have a 12. 25" clutch. You will need the starter spacer and longer bolts that come standard on '01 and up trucks with the 13" clutch. The spacer is Cummins p/n 3949583 and the bolts are Cummins p/n 3946085.

i was thinking about that but would a 12. 25 inch clutch and pressure plate bolt up to the 13inch flywheel?

the bolt pattern is a little different. so the flywheel would have to be drilled which is the exact opposite of the modifications people do to put the bigger clutch in. if you have the 13" clutch stick with it as it has more holding power. I may have my old flywheel around if you want to ship it from 10578 but the cummins spacer and bolts might be cheaper and definetely less work than swapping out the flywheel

i am pretty sure my clutch is a 12. 25 because it came from a 97 truck. it bolted to the flywheel just fine. what would my options be if the flwheel is indeed a 12. 25 and the starter is crashing into it? what else could the flywheel be from?

if the 12" clutch bolted up that's what flywheel u have. I assume you looked at it and the teeth were good. did u check the starter, is an auto starter different from a manul, are u sure its the right one. are u sure its the starter flywheel interface making noise and not something else?

We need more information. Does it crank or does the starter not even mesh? If it meshes and turns over and is just scraping some when running then you might have a worn starter housing. I installed a new after market flywheel from SBC that is setup to accept a 13" clutch but uses no starter spacer. What I found was the the ring gear is about . 020" wider than the OE ring. When I bolted the flywheel up I noticed that my starter drive was making some slight contact. At first I was faulting the new flywheel but soon found that the starter drive had quite a bit of end play and the wider ring gear just caused this to show up. This may have nothing to do with what you have going on.

i have tried starters from both a manual and auto, the starter spins, and the bendix comes out but from the looks of it it is crashing into the flywheel (shiny spot on flywheel about . 40 to . 50 of an inch from the end of flywheel teeth). will try to get a pic up tomorrow. the truck does not turn over either. Thanks for the help so far.

i feel kinda dumb, but its still confusing. i loosened the starter bolts about a turn, and it now works.

sounds like you got a very small clearance issue or a crack in the starter that an extra turn is opening up
