Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Flywheel resurfacing?

Going to replace the clutch and was curious about everyones thoughts about resurfacing the flywheel. The Dodge repair manual states not to but nearly every clutch company states to do it. Flywheel appears fine without burn marks or obvious problems. Thanks, Anthony

I bought an SBC Con O for my conversion and I was undecided as to whether or not to resurface my flywheel also. That is until I read in the installation instructions from SBC that they would not warranty if the flywheel was not resurfaced. My transmission guy at the local dealer said that the flywheel comes with a slight "bowl" or bevel to the flywheel. Make sure you take it to an automotive machine shop with a flywheel grinder made specifically to resurface flywheels.

The flywheel on our trucks is very thick and can be resurfaced usually more than once before it gets to minimum thickness. I have to ask why your are replacing it though. If your truck is stock and has less than 200k on it I doubt that it is worn out, unless it has been abused. I made the mistake of buying a new one for mine at 98k when the 5th gear fell off. Thought I might as well do the clutch at the same time. We miked the old one and it had less than 30% wear, even though I tow a very heavy trailer.

Rear main seal was leaking and I replaced it. So while I was there, thought I would put in a new clutch.

You need a fresh surface that has the burned on resins "scraped" off and the surface trued. usually just a coupl thousandths does it. Get a shop that knows how to do this and uses a blanchard stone, not a lathe. Dodge warns not to cut off "heavy stock" so don't just cut off . 030" because a shop says they do it that way.
