So I'm in the middle of a dash, evaporator and heater core change. The heater/ac assy is on the floor and putting the new evaporator in. The original evaporator has a white, foam type sheet that is covering one end. I understand the black foam strips that cushion the evap but this piece seems to wrap around one end and block some of the air flow. My gut tells me to leave this off but I really do not want to have to do this job twice. Whats the purpose of this and is it needed????????

I do not know the purpose but if it was there originally I would put it back in myself. I know my 99 blows plenty of air but I have not had it apart to know of the piece you are speaking of.

The purpose of that sheet is to direct condensate to where it can reach the drain. Otherwise, there are a couple places where the water can pool and get stinky, never mind getting trapped in/around the rubber seals.

Mine was in bad enough shape that I didn't bother trying to reinstall it with the new evap core. Haven't had any trouble yet.
