2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Fog light hookups

I currently have a 2001. 5 2x4 with the factory fog lights, but I'm looking at a 2001. 5 4X4 model I'm thinking about buying. It doesn't have the fog lights. Does anyone know if the wiring harness is already in place for the lights and all I would have to do is swap out the headlight switch for one optioned for the fog lights? Thanks for any info that can be shed on this.

I just installed the mopar fog light kit on my 98. 5. After I ran the wiring all the way to the switch, I saw that there was a factory wiring plug already in there. I pulled the dash apart and popped out the cover plate to put my new switch in and that's when I saw it. I then went and looked along the frame member under the radiator and found an empty plug on each side that obviously look like they're for plugging in the fogs.

If you look in your PDC you'll find a spot for a relay for fog lights also. I don't know if I could have used this set up or not because I didn't notice it was there until I was almost completely done. It definitely was for the fog lights though. The fog lights I got are slightly larger than the factorys however so perhaps not all is usable. You would think that buying factory accessories they would plug right in.

Bottom line I guess would be to pull the dash trim off and look behind your switch and see if there is an unused plug sitting there. If there is I would try plugging in a relay to the PDC and see if you're in business. Even if you can use part of it you would save yourself some time.

No, the fog lamp connector is hanging there i believe but the headlight switch is different, there is no hot wiring installed for the fog lamps. (some wiring there but its dead) and there's no relay's in place. Buying the fog light kit is probably the best option. :{

Why not?

I still think you can do it. You would have to swap headlight switches and put the fog lamp relay from the 2x into the PDC in the 4x. This would be very easy. The hard part would be to pull the fog lights off and put them on the 4x. It might be easier to just swap bumpers, fog lights and all. The bolts for attatching the bumper are a pain to get at but given time and another set of hands could be done in a couple hours. The hardest part would be to line the bumpers back up. Before you do this however, make sure the wiring is there.

If you can see contacts in the PDC under where the fog light relay plugs in, then probably you have enough wiring in the new truck to make the swap easily. Like AC says, exchanging the bumpers would save you lots of messing around.



All I used from the fog light kit for my '99 was the switch, the bezels, and the foglight assemblies themselves. I had to buy one harness that joins the foglights together and to the main harness under the radiator, and one relay. I used the wiring harness supplied in the foglight kit to activate the high beam headlights in my sport light conversion.

I recently installed the Mopar fog light kit in my 2002 and can report that my truck did not have any of the necessary wiring or connectors pre-installed. I definitely required all components of the wiring harness included in the kit. This does seem to be a change from what some members have reported in earlier 2nd generation trucks. I did this on mine. All I needed were the fog lights, the wiring that goes from the lights to the harness (which is in place), the new headlight switch, and the fog light relay for the PDC. For the price the dealer wanted for the bezels, I said no thanks and just carved mine open to accomodate the fog lights. It was a very easy job and turned out great. I took the plastic molding off the bumper first - which made taking the bumper off very easy.

My Mexican built 2002 2500 QC SB has the wiring from the PDC to the fog light connectors. I found the connectors tied up right behind the forward crossmember while I was installing tow hooks.

Cost of the kit?

I, too, am looking at improving the lighting on my 2001 QC since I came from a '94 F250 which definitely had better stock lighting and I am always wishing for more light now.



Sure sounds like a hassle to mount the lights in the bumper. That isn't something I'm looking foward to.



For you guys who have purchased the kit from the stealer... just what did they want for the kit, out of curiosity?

AC, you are comparing apples to oranges with jrollins... i. e. , your '98. 5 to his '01. 5 (divorced fog light switch on the '98. 5 -vs- the "integral" fog light switch on the later '01. 5 model). I too have a '98. 5 that didn't have the factory fog lights (the option was NOT available with an auto. and the Cummins TD). However, I DO have the wiring in the places you detailed. I was/possibly will use this to power the fog lights I have in my Dam Air, air dam (very close to factory fog lights).



I was hoping someone had already tried this to see if using the wiring plus adding the appropriate relay in the PDC was all that was required (other than wiring from the connectors on the frame cross member to the lights... I have the factory fog light switch and fog light/passenger side air bag trim panel).

I read the two posts by AC and then noticed that he was from Enumclaw. I thought, hmmm... that's odd I know most (if not all) of the TDR Cummins/Rammers in my little town of Enumclaw.



Then all of a sudden it took hold... duh! That is Aaron ____. And to make matters even more embarrassing, he and Rob Hanson were at my house Saturday afternoon!



... and I even noticed his "factory" fog lights and switch (and commented on same).

The older you get the more this is gonna happen Besides, we woke you up from your nap, I'm suprised you remember me at all. And you may be right about his 01. 5 being different. I just thought it would be worth a try to have a look and see if the wiring isn't already there. I felt pretty stupid having run all the wires to find out that I probably didn't need to.

It appears that there are several different wiring combinations that appear in these trucks. Mine was built in St Louis, and had a single connector under the middle of the rad frame for the fog lights; I had to purchase a divider cable that ran from the center connector out to the two fogs.
