Has anyone ever put a higher wattage or brighter bulb in the factory fog lights, or will the plastic assembly melt ? Or is the relay to light for anything bigger ?Oo.

I dont remember where I saw it,(probibally on this board) but someone wrote that either # 853 or 856 are 55 watt replacements. When they wrote it, they werent sure. Might want to run a search using those numbers.

Since the factory bulbs are 35 watt, I dont think you'll melt anything.

I ordered my 97 with the factory lights, but it came in without them. I bought the factory set and had the dealer install them. After a few years, I noticed a brown, bubbley spot in the center of each one of them, and I have only used the factory type bulb. I don't use them much anymore, unless weather conditions demand it, but I think they will have to be replaced eventually. I'd stick to what's in there & not try to go any hotter, unless you have a glass lense, & not plastic.

I posted the info a couple weeks ago on a thread over on the Prod. /Acc. board. The bulb you want is a type-885. It is a 55w replacement for the stock 38w bulb.

I installed these bulbs about 3 months ago after the 2nd of my stockers went out. My fogs get used daily during the 6am commute and I've seen no ill effects to date.

Good luck

I ran the higher wattage bulbs in my 98 for about 70K miles, until they burnt brown holes in the lenses. The bulbes had the same connector, but it plugged straight in, instead of an angle. Another difference was the factory ones had gray paint on the ends, where the replacments didnot.

Then I put together the group purchese for the CATZ lights, bought a set of them, and have been re-tightning them since I installed them. The catz are much better then the stock, but not as good as the set of Hela 550 fogs I have on my VW Jetta (also a Turbo Direct Injection diesel!)

I've had the stock replacements for all of my 70k miles and I too have the brown spot in the center. Looks really ugly if you get close enough to really have a look @ it.

i'd like to replacement them but I'm sure the assembly is rediculously expensive from D/C so I'll just wait till I get my DOR bumper and I'll be rid of them.

My lights are on for a minimum of 2 hours a day, and I dont have a brown spot on my lenses.

I'm still using stock wattage.

Guess I'm lucky.
