Guys,

I'm having a problem. Suddenly my fog lights don't work. I checked the fuse under the hood and, even though it looked fine, changed it. All to no avail. Anybody got any ideas on what I should do next?. ?. ?

MRB:(

There is also a relay for those fogs under the hood, I forget which it is, the cover should tell you or someone will chime in with its location. I'm not sure if it energizes the fog lights or shuts them off with the high beams. I removed the relay on my 01 and wired in a jumper so they stay on with the high beams.

I already checked under the hood...

Thanks, Mark but I already checked the fuse under the hood. I'm wondering about where else I might check for the problem. Anyone else have an idea?

MRB:( :{

Check under the hood again. This time check the fog lamp relay as Mark suggested, rather than the fuse. The relay is located in the PDC as is the fuse. You can check the relay by swapping with a neighboring relay. Another way to see if the relay is at fault is to pull the relay and "jump" the two large lugs. With no relay and the jumper in place, the fogs should be on with both low and high beams as long as the head lamp switch is in the fog position.

Other than the fuse & relay, the only reasons the fogs can be out are problems with the switch, wiring, or both fog lamp filaments.

May sound crazy but did you ck the bulbs? I had a VW Dasher wagon and the brake lights went out. It seems that both bulbs went out at once. I checked everything before I ckd the bulbs... It supprised me! Chris

Ck the relay also. They are inter-changeable with the other ones in the fuse box

Well...

It would appear that it is actually both bulbs went out at the same time. I just pulled the sockets and tested them, both are showing bright on the tester, but no light from the "fog light".

As usual, you guys are right about what is ailing my CTD. Thanks to you all. Also, I tried that jumper to replace the relay. We'll see if that works when I replace the bulbs in a few minutes. Thanks again.

The length of the jumper can be about one inch. As pictured, the fogs can now be on with either low or high beams. (Thanks Dave Fritz).

Mbean, Leave the relay out and jumper-wire as thomas shows. When you use a male push in, take the side tabs off of each side so the connecter fits in all the way. You'll like having your fogs on with the high beams. Chris

What Motorhead and Thomas said... ... .

I used a short lenght of wire, its no taller than the relay and the cover fits back on.

I keep the relay handy, I had it back to the stealer for another unrelated electrical nightmare and put the relay back in when I took the EZ out so the Tech wouldn't give me any crap.

;)

You will love the fogs on with the high beams, they fill in the dark void in front of the truck nicely.

I have been looking at the brightbox, but have heard stories of melted wiring and blown headlight switches.

Thanks guys...

I have completed the BS job of bulb replacement (the old ones had a 90 degree in them, the new ones don't. I also completed the jumper (as shown previously).

I haven't had ANY problems with my BriteBox at all. I've had it installed (also by myself) since January 2001. I made a trip from Virginia Beach to Albuquerque to Spokane and back to Albuquerque without it and knew instantly that I had to have something to help with the night-time, mountain driving (i. e. KY, TN, MT, WY, and AZ. Going through the north end of the Grand Canyon (after the install) was DRASTICALLY different. Again, not one single problem.

If both bulbs went together or close too, check the housings for leaking, the seals may have started to go and those H3 bulbs don't like bathing, not at all!!

DogHouse...

No, unlike up in MA, we haven't had hardly any rain this year, and none since last Sunday night. They haven't taken anything even remotely related to a bath in quite some time. Thanks for the thought though. I checked the seals just to make sure. They're good-to-go. HOO-AH!

Use a 896 instead of a 893 to get 90°

The owners manual lists a 893 as do most auto parts places. I broke a 893 trying to get it in. IMO you need to use the right angle bulbs (896). Don't know why the manual is wrong.

896's are not available everywhere, I gave up the first time and went to the dealer and yes they were a stealer in this case, as I recently found them elsewhere for about 1/3 the price.

my fog lights quit working about a year ago and I did all the checks and it wound up being the actual headlight switch. I took it out and pulled it apart and found that the contacts had bent just enough that they weren't making contact. When I tried to bend them in to make contact and then reinstalled the switch they worked again. Unfortunately only for about two weeks and when I pulled the switch again, I found the contacts had broken and I wound replacing the switch.

my fogs.....

died about 4-5 months ago... . the relay works but no power to the sockets... ...

haven't gone back to the stealer to have 'em fixed...

Shelby...

Hey, thanks for the tip. Next time I'll use 896s. I had to bribe the next door neighbor kid (20 y/o) to have him stick his skinny little arms up in there.

Sure was easy to remove the old ones, but it was a &%$#! to install the 893s. Either way, I use mine daily (to improve my chances of being seen) and I figure if they lasted since November 2000 to now, I'll be okay for a while.

Again, thanks for the tip... I'll definitely remember that one next time. :D
