Hi mark. You did not include your email address, so here is my reply.
The transmission cooler line with the gauge sending unit fitting already has the check valve in it. Just replace the old line with the new one. Actually, your 2001 should already have a check valve in it, but no gauge fitting.

as remember to remove the check valve that is already in place , its in the fitting screwed into the heat exchanger , either get another fitting , or drive the one in the fitting out ... with it out of the exchanger of course ...
 
Replace the rubber hose with the check valve on the (older) transmission line with a stainless braided line and no check valve. According to Bill K. , those check valves can get stuck shut!

(Bill happens to have that stainless line also! Give him a call, you'll get it the next day!)
