For those that have taken the engine fan off in the winter, did you put the fan clutch back on? I ended up doing that to protect threads, as I don't see how it could harm the clutch. Anyone found any problems by not having any resistance on the clutch?

Also, I was out putting up gates on a friend's elk farm last night. Temps were in the low 20's, with wind chill just above 0. Not only would my truck maintain engine temp, but I could also have the heater on hot and half fan. I've never been able to hold heat in that block before, and I wanted to say thanks to everyone who suggested taking off the fan in other posts.

Fans and Cold Weather

I run a Horton which I bought used in the classifieds here.

I love it, never goes on in the winter and goes on and off in the summer. A/C turns fan on by freon pressure so it only goes on when needed. My personal experience with electric fans is there is not one big enough to cool the CTD on hot days with AC on.

I've got my grille inserts in now. I'll take the fan off a little later. Nothings gonna hurt the threads. Maybe find a stub of rubber hose that will slip on there tight and you can cut it to exact length needed if you still want that insurance.

I like the fact that it will hold coolant temps up a little longer while idling. That big radiator sure does a good job... especially when its in the teens!!

Never heard of anybody reporting thread damage. Unless you drop something on it I cant imagine how it could get hurt.

I run electric fans, with no problems

I have a total of 4 electric fans. One on the inside of the fan schroud,I found a Jeep liberty large diameter fan for the puller, its powered by a Hayden relay and thermostate its adjustable. I have two more Hayden 13in fans as pushers on the front, powered by a seperate relay and thermostate, that is also adjustable. The Hayden relay assy. has a wire that connects to the AC clutch . The AC also powers up the pushers. I can also stagger the thermostates so as to only turn on what I need when I need it. The AC works better than it did with the fan clutch. I also have a 4th fan on the aux. trans cooler which I had to move cause I have twins,it has its own relay and thermostate. Tempreture never goes above 190deg and mostly runs below the 190 mark. As you can see by my profile I'm over 600hp and the fans have done a great job at keeping the heat down. Merv
