Old Diesel Iron in Texas

MCummings, and For the one's who want to know.......

MCummings,

What my gauges say is let me out of the dam box stick me up on the pillar and let me get to work. . LOL

No time got the box quicker than I thought... . I'll get it done one way or another. There is another lucky guy with the box posting that his EGT maxed out at 1300 running it hard. Normal cruising on the Interstate it's at 650 degree's..... The boost pressure runs about 26 PSI. . With wastegate disconnected got a reading @33 PSI... ... Is that much boost necessary? Got to talk to Aaron and see how much he turned up the fuel pressure... . No sense in disconnecting wastegate if fuel is not there. Might explain why he got those EGT readings high... Note he is also still running the stock exhaust configuration... .

When I get my gauges up and running I'll compare.

1300 slow down there

wow 1300, does that mean you guys will have to worry about melting pistons and heads:p

sorry, just had to throw a jab in there somewhere.

For what it is worth, you are gonna love the edge box. I am assuming when you mentioned aaron, that it is aaron at edge products. My buddy has installed a lot of the edge boxes, and those stinking things fly. One guy held the brakes and smoked the tires into 3rd gear!!

Sorry Gents This thread was suppose to go on First tow..

I tried to delete (the opening post)and put it over on the proper thread, and it was breaking my ball's so I gave up... . I know it's confusing but this post below should be the first one to read. . Should I number them lol I'm such a computer retard sometimes... .

This is where it started on FIRST TOW WITH A D-MAX... ... . MCUMMINGS asked WHAT MY GAUGES WERE READING

What I'll be getting is. .

Auto meter Boost and EGT pillar Mount.....

Propanes for cooking ... LOL

Gary - KJ6Q,

First of all I like you SIG... ... Keep drinking my friend..... Just don't be driven. Case there a lawyer present, Don't want no Lawsuit. LOL

I agree about the propane but... . I got one of them EDGE BOXES called the "JUICE" for the D-MAX..... First off AAron is one hell of a guy. . My truck is now a screaming tire smokin lunatic... . I have All that the Allison can handle stock in this box..... Running around at 90 HP (90 is max. hp ? with 250 torque) setting it's nuts... But a truck load of fun..... I'll have to change the valve body (which is available $700 bucks) to go over 250 FT #s Torque without sending it into limp mod or spin the clutches to dust... Right now it fits my needs. Going to take my buddy for a ride (maybe let him drive ) who owns a 99 CTD 3500 4x4 ext cab..... See what he thinks... .

MAC,

A disconnected wastegate and higher boost will help keep the EGTs down with the Edge box. Something to think about till you get your gauges in.

YOu wouldn't want me to MELT MY HEADS would ya LOL

Well, I suppose the JURY is still out. Most of the guys with a disconnected wastegate in the D-MAX are running propane. So there getting lower EGT anyway..... I read a post from Amianthus and it makes a lot of sense to me about without the added fuel more boost will just be a waste unless your after HIGHER EGT. Something we all want lower... . So until I hear different I'll let the GATE KEEPER decide and let the extra BOOST slip on by ... ... I'm going to call Aaron perhaps and ask him is there any benefit of doing such a mod with the "JUICE. "He'd be the one, perhaps in testing they tried.....

Maybe I didn't explain well enough.

What I was referring to was a condition (where I'm at now) where you have too much fueling that it forces your turbo to operate outside of it's efficiency range. More boost in any condition will give you lower EGT's. The problem comes when you have to spin the turbo so hard to get more boost. That causes more back pressure, and reduces your flow through the engine causing higher EGT's. It becomes counter-productive after a certain point and that's where you need a bigger turbo. Does that make any sense?

Amianthus,

Yes, it does... ... . In my case what IYHO... ... No implied responsibility on your part?. . Melt downs, head gaskets etc... Just some info... ... I was considering doing the mod..... Just wondering what EDGE brought the fuel pressure up to, I got to call... ... If I were to plug the wastegate,Were would I double back, OR would I do with open line?Plug it too sence their will be no flow? I should pop the hood and take a peek . . but since I'm sitting in front off this box I thought I'd ask..... THANKS in advance... .

MAC:D :D

AHHH never mind selfed explained ... . Went to look . Plug them both (ends)... ..... Thanks

Hey Mac, did you do a speed run up Southington mountain yet. To give you something to compare my truck's best is 78mph. I've got a 02' 4x4 quadcab 6spd with 3. 54 gears. For mods I've got a JRE cold air intake, ATS 4" exhaust, and a 60hp BD timing box.

MPagnucco,

Not yet... But I will..... I'm shooting for Jannety's shop Forman #'s. He's will probably come over the top way over a buck...  In his 3500 4x4 Cummins... . LOL..... There is a guy running around Wolcott,Waterbury who can run it at about 90 mph... So I've been told in a Cummins, and I believe it... Pretty fast... ... I'll post my # good or bad to tell you. Want to get my gauges in first. I know it will get them EGT climbing and I would like to know what they are. Should have them by 24th of this month..... Stay tuned... ...

M Barnett,

What does that truck scale at..... Good Question. I have a pretty good guess-tament..... Probably 7500 to 8000. . In that range I'm sure... . My 98 Dually scaled in about 7800 #s. Haven't had the opportunity to scale it for free. LOL

HMMmmm - since some propane injection systems maximize propane flow at high boost levels - and usually inject the propane in FRONT of the turbo and before the wastegate - what happens to that potentially flamable (explosive?) charge as it gets dumped by the wastegate?

AAAHHHHHH

Gary - KJ6Q

So you noticed I left something out did you... ... Well thats why I asked I had a brain freeze the what guys with propane are doing,is the hose doubles back to propane regulator. So very smart you are my friend... ... ... . :D :D I don't have propane therefore I was

Till I thought about it... ... ... If this is what you are refering to... ... If not sorry.....

And your tuff on the wax guys your making me double think all the money I'm spending on Zaino... . LOL... :D :D

MACOo.

Gary, the wastegate doesn't dump the air charge. It dumps the exhaust so that less boost is created. In other words, it allows some of the exhaust to bypass the turbine so that the compressor doesn't spin faster and generate more boost. What it dumps is already spent gasses so there isn't much of a chance to explode propane in an exhaust if the system is functioning properly. Now if you overload the thing with LP, that's another story.

Wow,, Just found this thread.

Too bad you couldn't get your gauges on before your Juice. A baseline would have been great. Aghhh,,, hind sight is 20/20.

We work our D-MAx hard,, and Dad won't put gauges (he's gonna run 'er till she blows)

That D-max has to always get shutdown hot. I wonder what EGT and boost are doing when we are WOT for minutes on end towing 20K. EGT must stabilize and stay low enough not to cause any problems,, otherwise we would have no doubt had problems allready.

Whenever you get those gauges on do a quickie little report for us. Is there something else a D-Max owner should "keep his eyes on" ?? Is there like a lift pump or something of the like? Oil Temperature??

In other words,, What should the 3rd gauge in a triple gauge pod be ??

Merrick Cummings Jr

Your answers sir.......

The "JUICE " is so easy to install that I will probably remove to get base line measurements... ... . I know, I know I'm going to be slammed, but... ... . Wow it cranks. ? Know it really feels like hopped up Gasser... ... . :D :D

Third gauge probably fuel pressure... ... Want to make sure it stays in the range ..... Don't want to store diesel in crankcase... ..... There has been some leakers. . So far mine no problems... ... Leakers with out mods... ... ...

We work our D-MAx hard,, and Dad won't put gauges (he's gonna run 'er till she blows)
You do it so I don't have to LOL Thank your dad for me... ... .

If I knew this box was going to fall in my lap so soon gauges would have been in..... Came as a surprise..... Edge (Aaron) is something else. Great guy... .

One of those first come first serve things. Such a deal. Get one, no comparison to stock. . More balls now then a stampede of BULLS looking for a horny COW..... LOL

Any other problems. Hhmmm keep an eye on oil as above... ... No pump problems..... Do something with the **** poor stock airbox drill holes in bottom (water retention problem) and below air filter in the front better breathing ,get better air cleaner..... ... ... . If you got a 02 get rid of aluminum tape on fender side of airbox. It will come off and block air travel soon. . Save for later for cracked head road side service... LOL:eek:

No other motor problems... ...

Ther has been a couple rear pinion seal leaks, and Normal for Gm axle seals... ... .

How do you like the Allison?

It's Not bad but it is limited ... ... Little quirky after all it is HD..... If I think of anything else I'll post. I sure will let you know on gauge report ladder part of next week. Till then don't melt it yet. . :D :D
