Go to the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Look for the following values:

MaxConnectionsPerServer

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

If they don't exist, create them as DWORD values.

Set these values to the number of simultaneous connections you want to allow. A good value is 50

Anytime someone asks me to edit the registry without telling me why is talking to a brick wall. Explain thyself oh vast suppository of worthless information. :)

LOL

OK - I thought you guys might balk at that.

This is a change that is supposed to speed up IE and I found that it did so immensely.

Internet Explorer limits the number of connections to one web server. Depending on the type of server, the number of connections is limited to 2 or 4.

This tweak removes this limit and therefore speeds up internet browsing.

Try it. If you don't like it you can change it back.

If you're not a power user, don't do this. If you are, you will have the wisdom to search the web and find what I am showing you is real.

I'm using ICQ 2001b and boy is it a HOG! I killed the ads but it still takes longer than I want to wait for it to start up. Does anyone have any other ways of trimming it down?

I'm on the XP Pro PC right now. I successfully launched regedit from start/run. A search found it in my c:\windows directory. I did not check but it may be a hidden directory and/or file. You can change your display to view hidden files and directories in the Tools/Folder Options/View menu.

btw, I would expect this to be the same on XP Home edition.
