This is for those of you who've dropped your tank to do the fuel vent mod or FASS install or whatever. How the heck do you remove the fuel clips? And how low can I drop the tank? I'd like to take the strap bolts off all the way and lower it with a jack, but I'm afraid I'd damage a fuel line... ?. I've got an 05' shortbed. I can't get my head up between the driveshaft and the tank to see what I'm doing. From the rear wheelwell, I can see but can only get one hand on the fitting, then I can't really see much after that. And tips/tricks will be appreciated greatly.

BTW- I have the fass instructions and the vent mod instructions, but unless my arms and hands and head shrinks, I can't see me doing this on my own.

I had the same problem. I removed the left rear tire, and jacked the truck up with the jack under the frame, but I could only grip one side of the two clips on each fuel line. I made a small tool out of a piece of wood (pine or fir) -- about 4 or 5 inches long, 1/2" wide and 1/4" thick, slightly tapered from one end to the other, and with a small oval detent sanded on one side with a 1" dia sanding drum so it would match the clips on the fuel lines. Then I squeezed with my middle finger on one clip while manipulating the wooden tool against the other clip (that I couldn't see) with my thumb, and using the tool as a wedge to push the fuel line connector away from the fitting on the tank. It wasn't easy and took about five tries, but finally worked. I dropped the tank all the way onto the ground.

i used a scribe after much cursing. i just stuck it though one side and then pryed down and i could pull the line off

I removed the straps and lowered the tank six or more inches and no problems or damage. Still a Bas***d to remove the fittings.

When I did the tank vent kit, I used a zip tie or wire tie about 1/4" wide and got it over the parts of the clip that have to be depressed and snugged it up. The connection then came right off.

You can also carefully unclip the fuel lines from the frame while the tank is up on the jack and the straps are removed. This allows you to drop the tank further to get at the clips. Make sure not to kink the metal lines. They are difficult to get out of the clips also.



Apparently the Dodge mechanics got tired of messing with these things and they were redesigned in '05.



This is the hardest part of getting the tank down without question.

One was pretty easy, but the other... .....

I took a piece of nylon twine and tied a slip knot around the fuel line, then slid it up to the fitting and pulled it tight. I had to attempt this several times before I was sucessful. You just have to be determined and stick with it. I found out that there is a tool made for the job, but I dont need it now.

For me, the key was getting that stinkin' tire out of the way. Once that was off, I could grip those suckers and yank them off (can you tell I was a little bent out of shape?) Obviously, the wheel liner has to be out of there too

so it was harder before the 05's? my 05 was a PITA!
