48RE Reliability Update Poll

315's Increase or Decrease MPG

So far, this is the best Dodge auto I've had. The stick is not an option for me in Atlanta traffic. This truck will stay stock or remain close to stock, so maybe it will last over a 100K. I've yet to loose a trans under 100K and I plan on bombing it when it does bite the big one. :D

Why get the Cummins with an auto? Heres another question, why buy a truck with 2WD? Personal prefrence assuming all other things are equal like reliability(fingers crossed). Even if it goes out you can still get a new QUALITY trans that wont go out for less than the hit you would take on a trade in for a 6 speed. Thats the way I look at it anyway.

My auto does everything that I need it to. I love it and wouldn't trade for a 6 spd. I'm lazy and like not having to shift all the time. . I can just sit back and cruise :D :D

I kind-a regretted it at first, but after the ATS converter and valvebody... ... ... ... no more reqret. Only thing I regret is the cost to upgrade the auto to what it should have been from the factory.

(I know 1 thing you can't do that a stick can. Pay only 750. 00 to fix the trans to hold a lot of power) I can do the trans to hold the power for LESS than $750. 00!!Did it on my 96 and am about to do it on the 03.

I've owned a '95 with 47RH, a '98 5spd, an '01. 5 47RE and now an '03 with 47RE. I don't know what you guys do to your 47s but I've not had any trouble with mine other than a governor pressure sensor/solenoid in the '01. 5. I was 900+ lbs over the GVWR with that one too. Never slipped at all.

One thing I've learned with the 47RE and I'd assume it would hold true for the 48RE also is, to make it work properly, disconnect the batteries for a couple of minutes to clear the TCM's memory, hook them back up, turn the key on but don't start the truck. Press the accelerator to the floor slowly and then back up. Then the next time you're out driving, when it's safe to do so (law ain't lookin') from a dead stop do a full throttle launch up to about 70mph so you'll be in O/D. Now your transmission will shift properly and respond to the throttle like it's supposed to. I don't care for these "learning" transmission programs but that's what we have. The slipping feeling we get every now and again is when the program gets confused. Mine would shift to second, release again and wind up in third all in the same shift. I knew it was an electronic problem because it never did it while towing 10,400 lbs.

I enjoyed driving my '98 5spd and almost bought a '01. 5 6spd. But traffic jambs can be a pain in the city. That and spring wrap-up while backing the 5'er in the yard will never happen with an auto.

No one has every commented on my auto...

XCX,

Dont get bummed out.

You should not complain, the stock trans will last for a lone time with stock power.

But you my friend have modified your pickup.

It is now time to bite the bullet and modify your transmission too!

Nothing better than a built transmission.

Good luck.

I've bought an auto, and wouldn't change a thing. 90% feel the same as I do. It would be intresting to see if the people that bought a six speed (manual) transmission feel as sure of there choice. Just wondering?????????????

This is a subject that people will never feel the same about. I bought a 6spd and wouldn't even look at an auto when I was buying. I have a friend with a 6spd and he is the same way, but his dad is just the opposite, its auto every time no exceptions. I know another guy that is impartial, he's had both and like/dislikes things about both. I personally feel that the nv5600 is hands down the best transmission put in any pickup on the market today. Some might argue with this statement but I can't help those misguided folks. :D :D

P. S. I do regret having the 3. 55 gears. Other than that I have the perfect truck. :)

I haven't had anyone say that but if they did I would say... . yes and its sooo sweet.

Its just too darn convenient with soda's, water, getting the sun glasses, or even getting into the pack of chewing gum when I want and not when a shift isn't required.

It see's 6 passenger duty often and while the stick will do that also the auto is nicer for the one in the middle.

I like the added safety of park when on the boat ramp. Both myself and the wife can drive a stick no problem and have owned many but for us and the purpose our truck see's we agreed on the auto.

At only 16K if it blew tomorrow I would just upgrade and wouldn't consider the stick. Not because I don't think they are good too but because they are inconvenient for me. Roll up windows are more trouble free too but not many opting for that so they don't have to replace expensive window motors down the road either.

My main passion is rock crawling and after shifting all weekend in all hairy possitions, the last thing I want to do is shift on the relaxing ride home. My leg gets really sore after a weekend of tough trails.
