Bought my '01 with a 47RE transmission 'cuz I didn't want to shift the transmission manually for 300K miles... . put 60k on her and decided it was time to upgrade to the new '04. 5 325/600 3500 DRW for the camper and towing load I have (GVW 17,5+)

I'm getting the six speed manual because it can be had with the factory jakobs exhaust brake... . and the auto's arn't ready for that yet from the factory.

No prob's with my automatic I had... . just want the exhaust braking capabilities offered in the manual...

no X that was ice you were on

I wish I had an auto in my 03. Thought of selling it and getting an auto, but with the big hit I'd take on it I'd rather spend some money in it. I've already have the DD3 injectors, all I need is a big turbo, good clutch and a TST box and I'd be rolling. Very tempting since I can't get the 97 to run the way it should.

Like so many issues, there are no right or wrong answers to this IMO. Get the right tool for the job. 2x4 vs. 4x4, long box vs. short box, auto vs. stick, DRW vs. SRW. ALL have advantages and disadvantages. Which ones are important to you for what you do?

I waffle on this issue every time I buy a truck. Had a F150 4 spd, traded for a D250 auto which I traded for a F150 5spd, then a F150 auto, then a PSD 5spd, then my '01. 5 47RE, and on to my '03 ETH DEE. Notice any trends?

48RE:

- stronger than 47RE

- way better in heavy traffic

- advantage in low speed manouvering when towing

- faster

- more convenient to answer cell or drink coffee or eat burgers, etc.

- easier to have multiple drivers (esp. significant others)

NV-5600

- arguably the strongest transmission made

- cheaper to hold big power - only need a clutch

- more gear selections which are useful when towing heavy

- exhaust brake compatible

- less driveline power loss

You can see by my sig what I chose and I think its best for me, where I live and what I do with my truck. No regrets.

Cheers

I agree, the autos will most likely need something if you plan to bomb your truck, and the 6 speed will need a clutch most likely, for me Id rather have a stick, but with my knees being shot and an ankle that has been through more surgerys, than Joan Rivers has had face lifts,I will stick to an auto;)

I used to say "automatic are for people without left feet".

In November a guy didn't see a stop sign while talking on his cell phone. I was on a harley he was driving a Ram, he won.

Now I need automatic [with no left leg]. I just glad I found the truck I got, but it cost me an arm and a leg. Yuk, yuk, yuk.

I mean it was expensive. But worth it.

It's not the worst auto I've seen behind a diesel.

If it shifted harder, wouldn't that put more stress on the other driveline components.

Got the auto for hauling horses. . smoother shifts...

As an aside, wife had knee surgery and had a full leg cast on her left leg for a couple of months and we both had stick shift trucks. So she is now she thinks the auto is the way to go for everything.

Anyway, I think the 6speed with an exhaust brake is perfect for someone pulling a fithwheel trailer, or someone pulling heavy on a regular basis but the auto seems fine for most anyone else.

AMEN! I bought my truck mainly to tow my junk to Rausch Creek and Paragon. After some hairy rock gardens type trails, my left leg feels like a wet noodle.

I have a 47RE with about 65000 miles. I haul 1. 5 tons on a regular basis as cargo. Traveling between 75 and 80. I have never had a problem. As a matter of fact i didnt know the 47 RE was problematic until I saw this sight. I readjust the front band and so far have had no problems. I believe maintenanceis the key. At 5000 miles a month I would have 1 huge left leg

The only reason I got an auto was because I saw the way my wife drove my 1/2 ton (the old truck) and I figured if I gave her one more thing to do other than steer, brake and go then it would get beat up even more. I don't care who makes the manual - I'm sure my wife would have it or the clutch ground to dust in 15k.

However I haven't had a lick of problems with mine at 65,000 miles, but I have made it a point to do my oil changes as recommended. I think that's the most important part with an automatic, as well as smart driving. If you're hauling 10,000 pounds you have to manually downshift when required and baby it a little- they aren't bulletproof. Some people who have problems with autos have problems because they put it in drive and go... ... and not pay attention to grades and loading, etc.

Now if you want to start bombing, again you have to be smart about it. Don't make 900 lb ft and expect an auto to handle it without mods.

I went with the auto because I bought the truck off the dealer's lot. Definately no real regrets just some wishing. If I had to do it again I may consider the 6 speed for the exhaust brake compatibility as well as some of the fun factor that I sometimes miss.

BUT, due to the amount of driving that I do for work it is really nice to have the auto when stuck in traffic. There is nothing worse than constanly having to shift when stuck in traffic. I currently have almost 90k on the truck.
