My 1999 still has original tires, Michelin LTX (61,000 miles). They need replacing. My spare has never been on the ground and I would like to use it as one of my tires and purchase only three tires but not Michelin. Would like to use BF Goodrich as they are quite a bit cheaper. Any bad safety concerns mixing brands of tires this way. I know in the past you never mixed bias and radials but these would all be radials.

Recently read an article where someone had purchased "new" tires and had a tire come apart, turns out some of the tires were over 4 years old when bought. The tires on your truck could be 6 years old, I would not put the spare on the ground with 3 new tires, keep it for a spare maybe but be very careful if it has to be used. bg

mixing tires can cause pulling or vibration prob, not to mention the safety factor of your spare, and being jambed under the truck for so long its prob out of balance too far to become a daily driven tire. (the frame presses against the tire on the top side, distorting the belts, thus a out of balance tire and ull not be able to correct properly with just weights)

there should be a date stamped in the DOT part of the tire. usually the last two digits are the year, but some differ. Id venture to say your spare is old, just go ahead and fork over the extra 150 for another tire.

Paul:

That's probably not the best idea you've ever had. A tire that old is likely to be prone to tread separation and blow out. As a previous poster advised, it would probably be unbalanced and unbalanceable. That tire would not match the new tires and you would feel it pulling ot one side or another and probably creating other handling issues. Besides that, you would then have no spare tire. And all of this to save the $100 a new BFG would cost at SAM's Club. Be a big spender. Buy a complete set of new tires.

Thanks for your reply Harvel but of course I would put my best on the ground tire as my spare. Don't see haveing a brand new spare that may never be used. I've never used the spare that came with truck.

I was in the tire business for too many years. Harvey's advise is the best. The diameter of an odd tire will be slightly different, and will cause a pull when on the front. Buy 4 and leave it where it is, just check the stem for cracking and tire for proper air.

Just went through this myself. By the time I shipped tires here, then found a shop to mount and balance tires I bought somewhere else, I wasn't saving much if any. Caught a sale at Sears, who will be there for support if anything goes wrong, no matter where in the country I may be. I was surprised that Sears had the best price on the BFG AT KO locally. Went with the 265/75/16's at about $153 each.

PS Definitely buy a whole set of four. :)

Although it has been a while I was the manager of a tire shop for six years. Buy the 4 tires and be done with it. I just recently traded 4 Michelins with 78K on them for a set of Perilli str highway tread for 428 out the door. It is a little lean right now with me not working steady so couldn't afford the Michelin's. So far the Pirelli's are doing fine. JMPO

If you mean cost of shipping to AL by SAM's Club, I don't think SAM's Club charges shipping. If you special order a set of tires in person at your closest SAM's Club or via internet, the tires show up at your local Club or the SAM's Club you designate. Prices are the same anywhere. You can shop for tires on the SAM's website: http://www.samsclub.com.

Buying 4 new tires is the right advice. For several reasons. No two mfg sizes are the same size. They willl be some difference in dia. which will affect the diffs. and how the truck tracks. The next is the ply layup. it is a little different with ever mfg. Some times it make a lot of difference how your truck will truck will track. I have seen some mismatchs have very olld tire wear. Hope that helps.

Each time I have gotten a new truck, my tire dealer has took in my new spare at a fair price on a new set. Then I use a worn one for a spare. Only one flat last two trucks. After this post, likely will have one now! Works for me. R reynolds
