Need some help guys

The other day I dragged a Ford 172ci diesel engine and generator out of the steel hopper at work. Well, after a little TLC, the engine runs just fine, but blows oil out the exhaust. I am interested in putting in a set of sleeves, pistons, and rings but need help to figure out exectly what I have. Do any of know where I can turn to get info on this engine. I believe that it from the 60's but not sure. Thank you.

Hey Eric!

I just looked this up in a Melling catalog and they are showing a 172 diesel engine from Ford as a tractor engine used from 1958 thru 1964. It has a 3. 9" bore and was used in series 800,900,1800, and 4000 tractors.

Ford used various car, truck, and tractor engines in their industrial engine offerings. Any parts you might need for this engine should be readily available, many thru regular auto parts stores.

Hope this helps!

Call 1. 800. 828. 3276 or visit any Farm and Country store. They have a parts catalog with your application in it. For example, what they call a rebore kit includes; aluminum pistons, pins, lock rings and piston rings for $400. Rings alone, $80. They also have rebuilt or new heads, valve train sets, cranks, rods... ... How much $$ you wanna spend?

I dug through my pile and found another catalog put out by VALU-BILT. Same phone number as Farm & Country? Something of interest, Ford also had a 172 CI gas engine. I am seeing slightly different specs on the replacement parts.

There was a series of these engine 132, 172, and 192. the 172 was available as a gas or diesel. The engine was used to power forklifts, tractors and industrial applications. If I remember correctly they dont have sleeves. Parts are available from Ford Industrial Engine suppliers. The heads were prone to cracking if overheated.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll try those two places and see what I can come up with. I appreciate the help very much. Take care.

Eric
