Just when I thought that the day could not get any stranger.........

Heated and cooled seating.......I did not know this..

About a couple months ago, I was headed up through a popular interchange in NJ. This necks down if staying on the main road, and any issue will cause problems. Well, I had a problem- last time it was a class 8 tractor with what I thought was in stage 4 derate. This time- holding a high mass for us was a newish Ford buck and a half. As I get up to see this, I notice in one scan, the ecoboost badge on the tailgate, and smoke rings of black coming out the tailpipe.
Obviously it was having a bad day. I rolled coal on him as I went by. Just 'cause.
I love technology, and Ford definitely overcooks technology. A truck should be simple and durable-a work vehicle. IMHO, there's just too much going on there. If you gotta have a Ford, go look at a F250 with the 6.2. That thing just sounds tough.

I took a trip across PA this summer with a friend in his 12 Ecoboost towing a 6000 lb boat. To be fair, the boat did sit up pretty tall (but no taller than a camper) and it really taxed that engine. Only on the down hills would it shift into OD and accoasionally the flats. Most of the time it was wound tighter than a banjo string. I kept expecting it to go POOF :-laf

A guy I work with has a 2013 Crew Cab 4x4 XLT with the Ecoboost that he drives to work. I have been in it several times when we go out to lunch etc. The last time i was in it, his dash display was showing 14.2 mpg average. I commented on it and he said that it was very close to hand calculation. Our area is mostly rural roads. It's a nice truck and runs well, but it probably gets at most .5-1 mpg better all around than my 1/2 Dodge. Factor in the pemium fuel requirement, and it doesn't make much sense.

Yea, I couldn't believe it either, especially since they are advertised to have such great mileage. He did say that he sees 21 in all highway driving. But around here, that rarely happens.

The difference is marketing claims vs real world driving. I'd love to talk to the heads that conned Ford into dropping a 2.7 and a 3.5 liter engine in a full size truck, and then rate it to tow 12k lbs. It'll be interesting to see how these engines stand up to abuse long term.

I was gonna write some thoughts on this.. but I realized it WAS a FORD so the issue has already been circled and painted BLUE.

The Ford I used to own, will be the last Ford I'll ever own. What crap they build nowadays, my parents had nothing but trouble with Fords, except the 65 289 Mustang? We inherited a 95 Thunderbird and a 95 Taurus wagon, in 2005 after I swore off fords. But free is hard to say no to when my Wife's parents gave them to us before they passed. The Taurus lost the transmission at 35K and the Thunderbird started having the usual problems you encounter with a vehicle with over 100K miles, at 50K. We sold the Thunderbird and gave the Taurus to her brother, who gave it away to another family member and complained about all the problems and accused us of perpously giving him the crapy car. (That's why his parents didn't give him any cars). But I digress, never again will I buy a ford, period!

I don't get it either...If in fact this engine is the "second coming"...then why isn't it the only gas engine available? Can you imagine how easy that would be for a dealer.....I would love to see how these really hold up if you were hauling daily.....

There are several that pull in the Stock Gas, 6500lb class with me. The Bullydog truck won 3rd in United Pullers (sled/truck pulls) points series this year. I can compete and beat them now, but it has taken 3 years of improving my old truck to do it. 1975 F-250 4x4, 428, C6, 4.88 gears and 31" tires. Here is a video of my last pull of the season, 3rd out of 19 trucks.

NYPD just got some tauri (many Taurus) in many flavors. I think some hiway units with this engine too. I'll have to put an ear down as that'll be the acid test.
Truthfully, the old Taurus was a battle wagon. It was the bread n butter car in my department for a long while. It was base with the ol 3.0 12valve. It was pretty indestuctable.

$1800.00 for a transmission rebuild, when I asked the rebuilder (good company and honest) why it failed at 35K miles, that old people owned and had it serviced religiously? I was told it was a common problem with the Ford Taurus.

Nice smooth pull Nick

Thank you, it is a rush like no other! You tow for 1500 miles round trip and only have one 20 second run to make the best pull that you can, it really makes you sit up and pay attention and hope you don't screw it up!

Now that's real nice, and sounds GREAT! I appreciate anyone who uses unique power. I understand that to be a FE motor- right?

Yes, stands for "Freakin Expensive":) They are making a comeback with parts available to build a complete new engine. It's fun when I can beat one of the more modern 460 based 385 series pullers (not often) with my old truck. I was amazed when I first started pulling and the little Eco-Boost Fords out pulled me, that's just wrong:-laf

Nick, stick to your guns. That's why I'm a small block Mopar guy. It won't be long before one of those bent 6's will ventilate all over the track and ruin it for all.

A good friend of mine had a machine shop. I'd hang out nights and weekends assembling engines, etc. We were doing a 390 for a guy, and he had his little boy, probably 8 years old, with him. The guy was asking about the different series Ford engines, and asks what does FE stand for, and without hesitation the little guy says, "Fast Engine!". We laughed our azzes off.
