European Diesel's

Powerstroke article in four wheeler

I helped little bro purchase a Ford 3550 hoe the otherday and need some suggestions as we try and get it up and running.

It had been rebuilt about 3 years ago and the mechanic that did the work quit with the job unfinished. Everything about the engine was buttoned up, but the radiator, hood, fan and other small items were not reinstalled.

Well, we brought it home, sprayed some WD-40 in the intake, and started fairly easly. Thought ALRIGHT, this is gonna be easy. Not.

Now after installing the radiator, fan, adjusting the valves, bleeding the air out of the fuel system, it's blowing black smoke, no power, and gets hot really quick.

What we've checked;

Pulled front of engine down and checked timing, OK.

Radiator, OK

Pump timing, OK.

Next, we plan to pull the head and make sure the headgasket is installed properly. Oh another thing, after it sets overnight, it vents steam out the oil inlet on the valve cover when started.

So, we're dealing with three problems:

1. Runs hot.

2. Black smoke, no power.

3. Steam from the block, not a lot, but noticeable.

Any help is greatly appricated.

Thanks, Ronnie

update

Pulled the head yesterday and we found a obstruction in the cooling jacket of the block. Some bugs had built a home there. That may have been part of the overheating problem.

Now it's a matter of waiting for the gasket kit to come in and reassemble.

I'm thinking the little CVA injection pump has some serious problems, anyone know of a good source of reconditioned pumps (at a good price) ?

Thanks, Ronnie

Valve adjustment

I read on the Kobuta forum that low power and overheating can also be caused by the valves being out of adjustment.
