Well, I did it...

Can someone tell me if ford owned volvo. I thought I read that they just sold them off but my brother in law says they never owned them

Ford owns (or owned, I know they were thinking about, but, hadn't heard it has been) Volve. At ne point or another, they also owned Jag, Land Rover, and (everyone probably knows this one) a major stake in Mazda. I've heard rumors of other companies Ford owns, but I won't spread because I can't either verify, or, I know aren't true.

According to the intardnet Ford still owns Volvo.

Also to all you Ford a bashers here. Ford did not take any bailout money, unlike GM and Chrysler. I still wouldn't own a powerjoke, but they earned a little more respect from me for turning down the handout.

Ford does own Cummings.

Cummins on the other hand is an entirely differant company that Ford owns no part in.

That's good to know.

Now, if someone will explain what "Cummings" manufactures the confusion will finally be put to rest . . . . well, at least until the next new member posts the question.

Does Ford own just the automotive part of volvo? I haven't followed it recently but I remember when the deal was happening and I had thought that they were not getting any of the OTR, heavy machinery, or marine stuff but I might be mistaken.

Yep, just the auto division, the truck, heavy equipment, and marine are a completely different company.

Volvo sold their automobile business to Ford. In the early 80s GM sold their declining heavy duty truck business to Volvo. More recently, Volvo trucks bought the Mack brand heavy duty truck business from Renault.

yep, and when volvo bought mack, quality issues really started to arrise with the trucks. i really would not have expected that.

Well, to sum it up Volvo sold off their automobile division to Ford, so Volvo trucks, construction equipment, Volvo Penta are still Swedish. Some of the cash they got from the Ford deal they invested by buying the truck division from Renault and also got Mack as part of the deal. To make it a little more confusing the trucks and cars still share the iron symbol even if they are not connected in any way.

Ford actually desperatly tries to sell off Volvo again, and BMW where interested. But today cash is not easily found in the automotive business.

I wonder who owns who next January??
