Here's an Interesting Duramax Thread

Does anyone know if they are having problems with the auto transmission? My friend at work has heard of a couple of people having problems with their's and was curious if there is a problem. He has a '01 2wd.

Alright, let the wise cracks fly. :)

Brian, the auto the ford boys have is a lot like the one we have for quality, decent really but has a horrible setup from the factory. I think apples to apples for stock trannies the 47RE is a better unit, but not by a lot. They also have a couple of trick transmission suppliers for the aftermarket, Brians Truck Shop is the name if I remember it correctly for the most popular. ATS has a ford transmission, and DTT has done some research into them, but I am not sure if they have a unit for retail sale or not. Same story for the ford guys as it is for us, if you are gonna pull hard and heay or up the power look into upgrading the transmission. Hope this helps. (no wise cracks but if you want I can add some, just let me know;) )

It's not my truck, so I don't care about the wise cracks. :D I'm just asking for an old, deaf, blind buddy of mine. He does'nt and will not add any power or pull anything very heavy. Just a med. sized boat every once in while.

My bro-in-law has a new F450 SuperDoody auto and it sucks goats. Just like my 47rh when it was stock, revs up and doesn't go anywhere. I told him he needs to do something about it but you know how that is

Friend of mine has a 99 F250 CC 4X4, pulls a 10,000 trailer. Is on his 4th transmission in 150,000 miles. Has had lots of problems with the transmission in general. Also had to have the injectors replaced around 100K.

paccool,

Ouch! Do you know how much Ford injectors are? I hear they are $300 to $400 each! And they got two to many! At least the transmission is fixable... the injectors aren't!

My Ford had a really bad transmission... . E40D! It had 66 K and it was already due for it's second rebuild. They have upgraded them pretty good over the years, but it is still the weakest point of the truck, and that is on a truck with lots of weak points including 8 MPG!

I had problems with my F350 dually - the auto transmission was a piece of garbage. I have heard of others were it died coming off the showroom floor almost. And that was just the beginning of my problems. :-{} Then again I won't own another Ford if it was given to me. :D

Thanks guys. I tell him to keep good maint. on the transmission so if it does have problems it will be covered under warranty. Bad thing about is that he was trying to buy a Dodge, but they were jerking him around and trying to give him a sky high finance rate. It was going to be almost exactly like mine. :(

we've had more problems from our manual 550's than the autos. i still dont beleive that there is an auto transmission that is really meant for heavy towing. the next two duallys we have ordered are chevy duramaxes, with the allison [gasp} i dont see them holding up either, but the crew cabs, as of now, are the selling point. also the price of the chevys was considerably below the 6 speed ho 2002 packages that we looked into with dodge. yes, below, the dodge boys dont haggle on the ctds, and i cant say that i blame them. the reason for the autos is that a couple of my guys have bad backs, and shifting a couple of hundered times a day doesnt help.

phords

repeat after me... phriends don't let phriends drive phords... i agree with charlie... . a bad dodge beats a good ford any day!!!

Packman,

I don't know where you are located but I can tell ya when I looked The Chevy boys wouldn't budge on the price of a Duramax but I got one heck of a deal on the Dodge. The Chevy listed for quite a few grand more and I was getting less. The Dodge was alot nicer truck IMO and the little ladies too. We both weren't too enthused with the Chevy, didn't like the interior and it just seemed cheap. I did alot of research before I made my decision and the Dodge worked best for us. I have been more than happy. Different strokes for different folks. I would buy a Chevy over the Fords any day but thats just me. I do have to say one thing though the competition definately is good for all of us. It keeps the big 3 on there toes. :D
