01 taurus Questions ??

My buddy has a 2003 ford f350 dually (he has issues) Changing rear brakes on it he says the axle has to come out and was wondering what the proper adjustment of the ratcheting nut is???

My experience has been:
1. Use gear oil to lube the nut/ratchet assembly
2. Thread it onto the hub and using the proper pinned spanner socket tighten it about like front wheel bearings.

Others may have more exact torque figures.

Sorry I don't have the figures for that year but the way these work is to torque them to a specified torque like say 65 ft lbs and then back off a number of clicks like say 8 for example for used bearings. Don't take these numbers to heart as they may or may not be correct. If I remember right these numbers are in the range for a '91 F350 but its been a while...

Just did a 93 F-350... . seems that whoever did the last brake job destroyed the l/s axle nut (left hand threads!!)and didn't bother fixing it or replacing the shoes on that side. Ended up having to CUT the nut into 2 pieces with a carbide burr to get the drum off.

I wasn't sure about the bearing preload either, I just tightened them up to zero last then gave them about 6 clicks preload. I'm sure that wasn't an exact FORD spec, but the truck is running fine!.

MY FRIENDS WAS USING TWO PUNCH'S TO HOLD IN THE PINS AND TURN THE NUT. i MADE HIM GET A SOCKET AND WE JUST SNUGGED EM UP LIKE A REGULAR WHEEL BEARING
