Who is towing with a 3.73 dif, but would like a 4.10?

3 seasons in to a 4 seasons?

Got the 2006 Trailer Life Towing Guide today. Yellow Ford on the cover. Ford ad on the first few pages. More Fords in all the pictures. Ford has the "best" towing capacity of any vehicle. More Ford pics after that.

Are these people biased?

You know I just got off a very long Road Trip NC to NM, and my wife agree's with me on this. "We played I spi, if you will. " We saw, especially in Texas huge loads on Dodge Flat beds and dually's. I'm talking 30, 40 foot flat beds with crap stacked up & strapped on. I'd see Fords with a 5th wheel every once and while, but when it comes to heavy loads; well you know we have the advantage. 6 in a row, make you go.....

I agree exactly with CHolman. I make the same observation weekly. I see precisely the same thing on the interstates. Most of the hotshotters, carhaulers, and RV transporters use Dodge-Cummins. The ones pulling the most outrageous huge loads are normally Dodge Rams.

Dodge could create some fantastic advertising just by taking a camera and some interviewers to visit Horizon or one of the other rV transport companies in northern Indiana. On any given day, out of every ten trucks in the lot six or seven will be Dodges, two or three will be Fords (but I think that percentage is shrinking), and one or two will be Chev/GMC.

Drivers who use their diesel powered light trucks for actual work involving heavy loads and high mileage quickly learn that the Cummins-powered Dodge is the "choice of champions. "

Here's a light load......

This is my "little" gooseneck with 6 tractors on it (double stacked side to side). I'm getting a bigger trailer so I can get 8 on it with loaders. I'll post a pic after the 1st after I pick up a load in TX.

they could do the same at a rodeo look at 40 truck and trailers you see about 25 dodges 10 fords and 5 gmc/chevy. or the horseshows our barn goes too out of all the little rigs id say somehwere around 80 to 85% are dodge about 10 to 15% fords and chevy is whats left.

as for pulling more weight i belive ford can frame and spring wise now you might have to bury the tach to get moving but like my truck trend mag says

ford's frame and spring setup are the most stable w/ dodge close behind and chevy last. now don't flame me for this becuase a ford's engine can't pull the weight thats where dodge and cummins shine.

I don't think anyone will flame you for stating the facts. I agree with your comments. A transporter I was talking to a few months ago was driving a $53+ thousand dollar Ford F350 dually with the King Ranch package . . . beautiful tooled leather, etc. His truck also had a 13,000 GVWR (I think that's correct), 26,000# GCWR, the integrated brake line pressure sensing trailer brake controller, unused "outfitter" switches on the dash, and the huge rear "sleeping" compartment. I also agree with your comment about the requirement to bury the tach for the Sick. 0 to develop enough torque to get the load rolling. The owner told me his truck had a 4. 33:1 ring and pinion to achieve the 26,000 rating.

The reason the transporter was driving the King Ranch Ford was because he had lost two engines in a 2004 Ford Super Duty. Ford bought the first one after trying to sneak out by claiming the warranty didn't cover "commercial "use. When the second engine began failing the truck was out of warranty. Dodge dealers wouldn't buy his truck, and the only way he found to escape from the 2004 with a dying engine was to trade for the $53k King Ranch at full MSRP. Poor guy probably owed enough on his new Ford to have bought a nice house in Texas.

Ford builds good truck platforms, no doubt about that in my experience. It is unfortunate that Ford has no choice but to install the lousy Navistar engine that Ford engineers know better than we do, is a poor product. I wonder what it's like to be a Ford warranty manager and answer your phone everyday. The Navistar Sick. 0 could very well sink Ford if there is no better engine in the pipeline now. Ford Super Duty trucks are probably the product that makes their money. Ford F series trucks have been the biggest selling truck in America for 20 years or so. Probably won't be for much longer.

I have driven both of our companys 7. 3 liter fords. They ride nicer than my dodge but I can outrun them any day. Here in CA most rodeos have 65-75% dodges and the rest is split by ford and chevy/GMC. A lot of gys are starting to go with the Chevys because of "the out of the box power" they have. I have to admit that they are fast. A buddy just bought one and it hauls ***. The guy he got his chip from has a chevy also and it will smoke just as much as my truck will too. I have learned, Ford is a no contest but I respect the Chevys . . . . . . . . .

Actually, Navistar does make a few good engines. My favorite was the mechanical DT466. Bullet proof, and was an easy 400,000 mile engine even pulling 30,000 lb loads. The DT466E weighs in at 1450 lbs and has a displacement of 7. 6 litres. This puts it in the Cummins ISC class of engine.

For a 550 class truck I think either the Navistar or the Cummins 8. 3 ISC would be excellent choices.

Sadly, the Powerstroke 6. 0 engine has turned out to be a P. O. S. . Perhaps it turned out that way because of the way Ford spec'ed the engine. In it's wisdom, when Dodge looked for an engine they chose a proven design.

on the rodeo thing ive noticed a few more chevys sneaking in and are getting close to tied w/ ford and dodge far out in front i don't know what rodeos you go to but i live in modesto and i go to la grange and oakdale and thats where im getting my numbers but yeah talking to the cowboys they most all like the dodges but chevy is climbing b/ its higher power levels

The worst thing with that book is that it is useless in making a decision. Surely Trailer Life has heard of GVWR and GCWR. If they want the book to have meaniing they should print the GVWR and GCWR
