GM to Copy DODGE!!!!

Looked at a Chevy 5500 4X4 ... wow! Help me!

According to Diesel Power magazine(Spring 2005 issue) Dodge is a strong performer, only it's shallow bed and quick steering keep it from being on top. Dodge has a big disadvantage when hooked up to a trailer! The quick steering makes overcorrections to be made too easy! " We would recommend the Dodge to anyone who has the need for a heavy-duty truck but might see more commuting than towing"  I can't believe what I am reading here!!! They have a web site www.dieselpowermag.com haven't had a chance to look at it yet! Anyone else read this mag yet? I guess I will have to get used to going grocery shopping without the trailer!!! :-laf

Nice picture of the editor in front of his powderjoke. Hmmmm

I'm trying to figure out how the ford beat the Dodge and chev in the towing test. Is it possible for a ford with LESS HORSEPOWER and TORQUE to out pull the Dodge or Chev?

First magazine I ever bought that didn't have one single subscribtion form in it.

Is the Dodge bed really more shallow? By how much?

I had no idea slow, sluggish, unresponsive steering was more desired in a tow vehicle!

I'll have to pick up a copy and read the article. Can't believe they relegated the Dodge to grocery-getter status. Probably the single most powerful insult you can hurl at a pickup truck owner.

Maybe they're not planning on being around long enough to take peoples money in advance. Although it's a decent idea for a magazine, I just don't see how they can come up with enough substance month after month to keep it going. You can only have so many shootouts and modified truck articles.

Biggest complaint I have heard about the new Fords, is that it is almost impossible for an average sized person to reach things at the bottom of a Ford bed, as the sides are way to high.

Plus, magazine shootouts never tell you about all the reflashes, trans, and headgasket issues you should expect with a new Ford truck.

What's up with modern Ford pick-ups being so high? I have a 1963 Jeep J300 pick-up, with more ground clearance than most stock Ford trucks, and is A LOT lower, while having good interior space. You look underneath, and you can't see anything hanging below the frame rails, everything is neatly tucked in out of harms way.

Why do they make trucks so unnecessarily tall?

Maybe they figured that since Ford out sells both Dodge and Chevy/GMC by nearly 2 to 1 (According to the Diesel Stop!), that they can sell twice the magazines if they praise the Ford! :-laf Guess I'll just have to pass on that magazine and wait on the TDR!

03' QC, long bed, 4X4, H. O. 6 spd.

I'll wait for the 500k mile shootout.

It'll be a W250 CTD vs B/E CTD vs D/E CTD.

(the only ones worth driving after 500k)

I am very happy with my Dodge truck, but I agree that the steering is quite quick and actually would rather that the steering response was a little slower. That is just my opinion and I would not trade my Dodge for any Ford or Gm truck

Sad, it appears to be a sales ad. The articles read like a brochure. I am not blaming them but its not for the diesel enthusiast. If someone who knows zero wanted more power they could get some from the articles but I like reading comparisons on products.

Did you see the PS van 6liter with????186 hp stock. Any novice diesel enthusiast would at least ask why that truck didn't have more power stock. Most I have seen were 240 and up.

When you see articles comparing different intakes, exhausts, chips, etc. there might be some value in that thing. It would be nice if there were an in depth magazine on diesels.

Oh yeah I subscribe to the only good one I know of.

They are certainly right about one thing. The Ford doesn't have quick steering. It's mushy and seems none responsive when towing. To me, that's a lot more of a concern than quick steering. With my Brother in Law's Ford, I don't really know when it's going to turn so I'm a little tense driving it. My 05 is very responsive, doesn't wander and stays straight. Those writers need to get in touch with real driving.

Not to cause a huge debate but it will, as far as HP and TQ ratings, has anyone ever heard that the way Ford rates their engines is different than GM and Dodge? I was told that the 6. 0 PSD, Duramax, and Cummins if all put on the same dyno would be within 10 HP and 10 Lbs Ft of Tq of each other. Reason is Ford supposedly rates theirs with all the accessories on, altenator, A/C, power steering pump, while Dodge and Gm do not, just the straight engine.

Personally, I believe this to be true, all these trucks are so close in capability, if the ford was giving up 40 lbs of TQ I think it would have a hard time winning the drag race pulling a trailer they did. They are all so close like I said it is a matter of how you want your power.

Ok, flame suit is on, let the BBQ begin... ... ... .....

It's all about money. It's all about who is paying Diesel Power Magazine for ads. Only magazines like Consumer Reports, that have no sponsors can be unbiased. Pay no attention to such crap. Grizzly

Not true. They all test with accessories on. Back pre 1972, no accessories is how they rated engines and that was Gross HP.

From the dyno runs I have done, the Cummins is the TQ king. HP, the 6. 0 and 5. 9 are very close, not so in TQ though. But then you add in a 5 speed auto to a 4 speed auto and the Dodge is at a disadvantage. That extra gear the Allison and TS provide will make up for lack of torque.

Steering, ford vs dodge...

I Have a parking lot area at my shop that is about 55 feet across. When I pull in, I can turn around in my 96 Dodge 3500 ex cab, no problem. When I get a load of trailers deleivered, the driver has a 03 Ford Extra cab 2wd dually. Cant even come CLOSE to turning around in that spot. Looks like it has a 75 ft turning circle!

If you look at the last page of the shoot out DODGE wins like 25 of the 29 catagories and some how they pick ford the winner ... . I never have under stood that part.

No Respect I tell Ya' No Respect at all ... . what does DC have to do to get some reconision in the media anyway its already MORE POWERFUL , LIGHTER AND LONGER LASTING Whats next

Makes you wonder who all these guy's are involved in the mag's publication?

Yeah, Ford does it different... THEY MAKE UP THE NUMBERS!

How anyone can possibly believe a single HP or Torque number that comes from Ford is beyond me. Remember the Mustang Cobra owner(s) who sued Ford for claiming more horsepower than the vehicle had?

In fact, I'm not sure I trust GM or DC's numbers either. Cummins' numbers I do trust.

-Ryan

P. S. Hyundai has also been investigated for making up horsepower numbers.

Sowhat happened between 2004. 5and 2005 that boosted TQ 10 pounds when Gm announced they had 605? Suddenly Dodge says they have 610. Yet has anything really changed, seems it was changed very late in the "marketing" campaign.

I think Ford would be more afraid of pumping up numbers after the Cobra incident.
