Truck Wars: Even With Heavy Duty Trucks, The Fight Turns to Green

Anybody else read this article?

"A caravan of journalists drove new Ford Powerstroke diesels from a quarry 16 miles off paved road to Phoenix. The whole trip was about 75 miles. Each truck had three or four people, plus 1000-pound loads in the bed. I rode in a truck that managed 24. 5 mpg, with the driver staying locked on 55 mph except for the 16-mile dirt-road bit. But a team of three who was out to win, got more than 29 mpg. Ford says it’s own testers scored between 23 mpg to 26 mpg. The fuel economy was tracked on the truck’s electronic system. "

Maybe I'm just pessimistic (realistic), but Ford must be tweaking the math in their computers to build up some hype about fuel economy.

"The Federal government does not certify fuel economy for trucks above 8,500 pounds, making fuel economy a raucous discussion over drafts. "

So if fuel economy isn't certified in our trucks, can Ford just use their own math to make people feel like they are getting better mileage? Just doing some quick math, if we could get 26 mpg with our 35 gallon tanks we could go 910 miles per fill up... sorry, had to pinch myself.

Just spoke with a buddy he is a die hard Ford man and drives a new ford truck for work and he said the stupid thing is a Fuel Pig 8 mpg

That must be the biggest cliff in the world 'cause the only way that truck will get MPG that good is if it was going over a cliff!

Read the whole thing on other furoms. Its a joke. They take trucks with 3. 3 gearing tell them all how to drive super slow and volla, great mileage. Thats great but what about a real CC, DRW with 3. 73 gears going 75 down the freeway?

On my '06 F250 4x4 with the 6. 0 Power Choke, if I filled up and stayed at 55-58 mph on the freeway, I could easily get 23mpg. There have been several posts on this site with people driving a 6. 7 and complaining about crappy mileage but they are doing 70 mph. I'd really like to hear what mileage they get if they fill up, hop on the freeway an stay at 55 mpg for 50-100 miles. I bet the RAM's will get over 20-25 mpg.

I'm telling you I could do it and I'm no Ford lover (it was bought back). Both the in-dash meter and by hand. But you have to be religious about keeping your speed down and once you got onto city streets it dropped quickly.

This test is with the new "Scorpion" diesel that Ford has designed from the ground up. It is not the old Navistar. The engine is supposed to be significantly more efficient than the Navistar unit. There is a lot of secrecy about this engine.

The company I work for builds automated machinery. Over a year ago we delivered a machine to a company in Florida, that is a supplier of valve train components to Ford (and others). This machine makes the hydraulic valve lash adjusters for new "Scorpion" as well as the new "Boss" engines for Ford. Additionally, the machine makes the lash adjusters for some VW engines. The parts are different for all 3 units, but similar in design, similar enough to make them all on the same machine. The machine is capable of making 45 parts each minute. That is a lot of engines!

I am hoping Ford gets it right with this new engine. Ford makes a decent truck, but the Powerstroke has been pretty weak starting with the 6. 0. If Ford can get everyday mileage up into the 20's, and have a reliable engine, it would be a real game changer. Competition is good. Competition makes things better for us consumers. Hopefully the brilliant engineers at Cummins will get it even better.

After what the 6. 0 and 6. 4 did to Fords reputation and there sales numbers I would not underestimate the new scorpion motor for a second. They know they have to make this new truck much faster, quieter, smoother and efficient than the other two or the damage to there reputation from the last two motors may be permanent. I agree with sean I think it will be a game changer

The 09 Ford we have at work gets 8 to 9 mpg by the computer, don't know what it gets hand calc'ed. :{ It is only used locally and with no loads.

If this new Scorpion offers even Ford's claim of an 18% improvement, just imagine what that will do to the resale value for 6. 0 and 6. 4 owners. At least the 6. 7, despite whatever teething problems it may have had, leaves behind a positive legacy.

Here's the key sentence:

"The fuel economy was tracked on the truck's electronic system. "

Well, according to the fancy "electronic system" in my '02, I commonly get 29 MPG out on the freeway - but the "electronic system" lies - considerably! And ANY maker posting crap claims like that - without actual calibrated and externally verified data - is desperate for good news to flash in front of gullible potential buyers!

YEAH - *I* hope Ford comes up with a winner too - but in FACT - not BS!

Its just like the new" Obamanomics" where they can say anything they want. The masses will believe whatever they say and no one ever calls them on their numbers.

Couldn't agree more... excellent words.
