Real Diesels.....

Duramax Safe Mode?

For all of you readers who have asked the eternal diesel question, "who is better between Ford Powerstroke and Dodge Cummins". I have driven nothing but the Dodge Cummins for the last six years for business use and I have put the trucks through all of the paces. I have never had any significant complaints with the Dodge or the Cummins engine. About two weeks ago I bought a Ford Powerstroke because I wanted more cab room than the Dodge offers... ... . what a dissapointment. I had to spend $560. 00 to put a performance computer chip and a K&N air filter just to get the Ford to perform as well as the almost 100 cubic inch, two cylinder smaller Cummins engine. Besides that the Ford cab is not insulated near as well as the Dodge and in spite of the fact that the engine is quiter, you hear every noise that the road throws at you in the cab of the Ford... ... Ford should take a lesson from Dodge on how to build a quality truck. That is just the beginning of the complaints that I have with the Ford. I can assure you all that I will go back to Dodge as soon as I no longer need the extra space in the back of the cab... ... in short "Ford sucks". I almost forgot to mention that I went from 20 mpg in my Dodge to 11. 7 mpg in my Ford. Think about that!!

The guys on the Ford site would NOT be happy to see your post, although I'll bet that a lot of them feel the same way.
Phil

The other F**D guys may feel that way..... but would they admit it? #ad

we have a couple of 550 psds in the fleet and have to agree with you. theres a good truck lurking in there somewhere, but we havent found it yet, nothing but problems. i hope that the ford guys do read these posts, because ill be the first to tell them that they have a fine hd truck, except for the trans, suspension, and poorly concieved motor compartment and design of the intake, turbo system. h. . l the turbo is almost behind the firewall, what sense does that make? to check connections, you almost have to pull the motor. i know people are loyal to that engine and truck, but our gas and dsl dodges have proven to be the true work trucks. not fancy or flashy but economical and reliable. thats all we want for our fleet. if they squeek or creak or dont have the room of the other brands, well thats the trade off. but what i have seen over the last 4 generations of hd pickups is that dodge may be always a step behind in alot of the hype, but they always make the best "work" truck. that means a truck that serves the purpose of the buyer and then gets quietly retired to an easier duty for the rest of its life. look at it this way, how many gm and ford diesels do you see fueling up next to you that are over 10 years old? ive got two first generation dodges that can make that claim.

We have only 3 0r 4 Rams and a bunch of PSD's.
I very rarely drive or even open the doors of our PSD's, but today, my boss asked me to hook up one of our trailers to one of our 3/4 ton PSD's so,when I slammed the door closed I got a huge smile, because it was like closing a Japanese truck door... tinny... if you know what I mean!
And then, when I put it in reverse to line up the hitch, it was totally gutless!
There's NO WAY I will ever own a PSD.
It was quieter, but that's all!

I know what you mean about the Fords. We also have a 2001 PSD f350 srw 4X4 4door auto. There is not one person at work that likes it. I only work with 8 other people, but NOBODY wants to get this truck. 27,000 km's on it which is about 16,000 miles and it goes trough 8 litres or about 2 gallons of motor oil between changes. I kid you not, I was standing there when the driver dumped in a full 4 litre jug! #ad
He said this is the second one I put in this month! Must be something wrong with it, cuz there are no visable leaks and it doesn't smoke. Go figure, just glad I am not making those $1000 dollar a month payments!

We all joke and argue about who has to have it. Everybody also thinks it is way underpowered. Go figure! #ad

Has anyone ever heard an old Drag Racer ask "Do You know what Power SOUNDS Like?"

Power is Loud, and (personally) Deep Sounding.

Ever heard a Nascar running to red line?
It brings POWER To my Mind.

Ever hear a 4 cylinder Toyata Running to redline?
Doesn't remind me of POWER.

Ever hear a CUMMINS Runnin' to Red line?
Reminds me of POWER.

Ever hear a PSD Running to red line?
Reminds of that that stupid toyota... .

Ever hear a Duramax running to redline?
Me neither, they are to quiet. (The Toyota again)

Ok, Now Time for me to eat crow.

P. S. Me and My Dad just picked up a gooseneck trailer,, we towed from San Antonio Tx. To Laredo Tx. Smooth, and quiet, But the engine and allison transmission liked to sit at 3,000RPM+ when going up the hills at 70MPH.

It just amazes me how Ford outsells Cummins 3 to 1. Mine has 75k miles without any problems. Never been outrun by any PSD or Cummins. The new ETH Cummins... less than 4K miles has been back to the dealer 5 times in less than 3 weeks... it is still dumping oil out of the back of the engine. This 5 star service is just impressing me to no end. The truck runs great... just leaks oil like a sieve... CJ

BOMBER_101,

How about a Nitromethane Digger at launch?

I think that gives the word POWER a new meaning.

CJ,
Sounds like you have a dealer issue on your hands. I have had both good and horrible service from Dodge... . very little in between. But I have never had oil leaks on any of my Cummins engines... . especially not on a new one

The truck went to the dealer I purchased it from three times. It is now going to a second dealer for the second time. I spoke to them on Friday... they are pulling the engine. Annoying. . YES. . typical. . NO. I'm just going to have to hope the old beat up good for nothing PSD can get me around for another week!... CJ

PSD Picks

i scratch my head on why ford outsells dodge so much. I think alot of it has to do with brand loyalty. Look what dodge started with they stuck with the first gen truck for so long when the other 2 brands clearly outclassed them. So they where pretty much starting from scratch in comparsion to the other makes. I looked at the #'s in the lastet TDR and i was suprised to see that chevy now sells so many trucks. They don't where i live. I have had tons of bad luck with GM products and i think they are crap but they still sell trucks so go figure. I think ford makes a great truck but i haven't completly grown to like the body style and i think the interior on the super duty is plain. I was talking to a friend yesterday that just bought a ford he told me he wanted a dodge but needed a 4 door. I think dodge hurt themselves really really bad by not haveing a 4 door.

Brand F might outsell Dodge by 3 to 1, but how does that factor in with people trading their 1 to 2 year old PSDs? Have you seen how many really new PSDs are on the used truck section?

Perhaps that has something to do with the 3 to 1 new sales ratio. One would expect to see 3 psd's on a used lot for every 1 cummins. At least I would think so. #ad

All trucks have their quirks. I'm sure on any given day at any given busy diesel fullup station, you could find just as many people who think their cummins sucks as people who think their psd sucks. Although I bet that 98% of everyone driving a diesel pickup is fairly happy with their rig.

OK guys... pay attention to this in your neck-of-the-woods and see if it's the same as here... I NEVER see a used Cummins Ram on the Ford lots, but always see several used PSD's on the DC lots. Is that a circumstance of 3-to-1? I think not.

CJ , i'm curious as to that leak outcome , i have an oil leak at the rear of the motor also , i think its the valvecover , but not sure , i always have oil on the back of the head when i pull the cover for an injector change and the rear of the pan and trans is always wet with oil . but it goes like heck , i'll live with the oil leak .

as far as never being beat , must not be any BOMBed trucks around there , there is always someone faster ... .

One of the big reasons why they out sell is because they (ford) practically give there trucks for commercial use. Phone, power, R&R, etc... . If you were to do a comparison of just personal consumer of cummins vs PS I think cummins wins hands down. Commercial buyers are starting to figure out the "real" truck though.

Think of it as an over the road tractor. You see a lot of Internationals and Freightliners. Then you see a few Western Stars and Peterbilts. If you were going to buy a tractor and it was your money to spend would you buy the International/Freightliner or Western Star/Peterbilt? Is it cost? Dependability? They are all pretty much the same, but when you think of WS/Peterbilts you think of a big powerful diesel. You know, like the Ram.

I own Navistar Stock from My old IHC days. Of Course I'd buy a Navistar. I wouldn't even think twice about it, Just Do It! After that I would consider Peterbilt. Dealer and service availability Has to be the BIGGEST concern in that decision. Been There, Couldn't find a dealer, Never Goin Back! to that part of the country again! "Where You Run determines WHAT you run" If You make a decision to buy a certain vehicle because it may impress someone else, You screwed up. You buy it because of what It can do FOR YOU, and for How Much it'll do it for. Cost Per Mile is ALL it comes down to. MONEY... .
DENNY... ... ... ... ... .
