Service Manual Question

I'm selling my 93 W350 for several reasons. I do like the truck a lot,the thing is though, its got a huge flatbed on it,its a dually and its black which makes it VERY VERY hot. I'm 17,senior year in high school so I have to park at school and I'll tell you what, being that big of a truck Oo. Its hell to park it in the tight parking spots and I'm not a fan of the flatbed or the automatic trans. I have had a feller wanting to trade parcially for a truck he has,a 1990 Ford F350 4x4 ex. cab with a CTD/5spd,pushing 400HP,stacks and all. Waiting on pictures from him right now to see what the truck is,how it looks etc etc. Now I've heard of people putting a CTD in Fords before. Can any of yall tell me is this good, bad, ugly or whatever you'd like. I'm not sure if its a 12 or 24 valve,Getrag or NV4500 trans or what. I'll update as I find out. Right now I can't really afford a diesel, but as of today I know have a job so that will help me a good bit and I love these diesels but just don't really need a dually like my 93. I want a truck that I can get in and go anywhere and depend on,go on long trips, tow my trailer and truck and just about whatever, want a reg. cab so I can throw junk in it and not have to strap everything down on the flatbed and a truck that will last me for a long time to come. Any ideas or helpful hints boys and girls??

We need a little more info on the other truck. So let us know when you find out.

Now if that deal falls threw. If you want a dually bed I'll do some swaping with you. My truck is a twin to yours. I don't like P/U beds.

I don't know..... you truck looks pretty well suited for a HS parking lot... . who could hurt your truck... I mean really now... That truck really screams "I'll park where I want it, and you can park in my bed"

Here is what he sent about the truck I hope this will shed a little more light, other questions that need to be asked would be greatly appreciated cause I'm still learning a lot about these motors. I've never been a Ford fan because I've grown up around Dodges but I've started to take a liking to them, especially the new F150s(very nice trucks I think) Help me out on this one guys, yall have never let me down before :)

The truck is a 90 model ford with a 96 cummins motor, nv4500 trans, It is a dually The stacks come up through the front corners of the bed(inside the bed), The motor has 100 horse injectors,#11 fuel plate, the pump has been tweeked, the timing has been changed a little, after market air system,(K@N) It has a boost gauge (pushing around 40pounds of boost)

had a pyro gauge but it went bad. Has 3" exuast and turns into 5" at the stacks, Gets around 13miles per gallon loaded with two trucks and 30 foot trailer The truck is very depenable we went to oaklohoma and pulled two trucks out there just a few months ago.

The only reason for selling is I want a flat bed and tired og changing gears all the time You can keep the winch

Let me get this straight..... You're in the south; have a 4x4, flatbed, diesel, DUALLY, and you want to GET RID OF IT? Man, you are the envy of everyone on the parking lot (not to mention in need of a psychological evaluation:D). I tend to agree with Headshot zod- that is the IDEAL H. S. parking lot truck. Put a little effort under the hood, and you can rule the roost. No one ever bothered me when I had to drive the 72 F350 dump/flatbed to school.

If you dont want it, I may try to fanagle my way into it. I like the Ford TRUCKS better than the Dodges (sorry, I was raised on old (69-75) F250s and F350s and the bodies hold up better than Dodges), but hate the 6. 9/7. 3/PSD engines. Let us know what you think of it.

well tell u what i'm not sure how i'm gonna get my truck in the school parking lot next year... but i agree with daniel..... the bigger you are the beter chance ppl won't start a fight... . (that's y i'm gonna drive my bosses 4430 john deere to school hehehehe) also if u got enough feet under your hood to make an army and enought horses to pull a house down i dout any one will want to start any thing... if they do tell them to meet u and the local red light then... we'll let the engines talk! *smiles*

the only reson i bought this trucks is for the engine and trans. (well didn't have one when i bought it but... ) and in my mind all there is to a truck is a engine and trans... body ect is not needed

Theres gotta be a reason the Ford owner wants to get out of his truck though??!! Think about it, he will be downgrading, 96 p-pumped big horse motor to 93 ve powered limited compared to p-pump. Pyro went lol, bet that aint the only thing that went bad, probly was running some high egt's big sticks, stock 12cm housing, pulling a big load um huh sure, can we say 1500* for an extented period. . better stick with grabbing life by the horns, DODGE.

Here is some quick info and I need a few more questions asked if anybody knows.

96 12 valve CTD,NV4500,NP241(I believe) all from a 96 Dodge that was wrecked. #11 plate,100hp injectors, pump tweaked, timing advanced,NV4500 with 12" Centerforce clutch, doesn't slip etc etc. P-pump,K&N on turbo,3" pipe into the 5" stacks, water, oil, boost(all work),pyro, feller doing exhaust work broke the tit for the pyro(which makes me think it was post-turbo. He didn't worry about it,said it has never got hot,EGTs has never got to high,trans/t-case are in good shape. New rear brakes, new 4. 10 gears in rearend. New paint last summer, buddy goofed a gooseneck trailer and it ripped the tailgate off, paint on roof is slightly faded. He said it had a HDDana 44 front axle(feller before robbed the 60). He said what the rearend was but I can't remember. Reason to trade, needs a auto cause of wife and other family, tired of changing gears, wants a flatbed, got several trail rigs, had a flatbed at one time, sold it,sorry he did, built ramps, put trail rig on flatbed,so he didnt have to tow a trailer etc etc,all and all it was a lot better. I'm thinking good deal

Questions I'm wondering. Cause its a Ford, doesn't it have coils on the front? Is it a solid front axle or that goofy assed I-beam junk they used to have. What kind of rearend is in it? Its the rearend that came in it. If yall could help me out with the things I don't know about the Fords that would be a good help to.

or that goofy assed I-beam junk they used to have

Drove a stock 70 Ford 350 till it was out classed by Cummins power in a crew cab Chevy that we did in 88. Chevy or Dodge for that matter have over sized car suspension on the front. Like Daniel, I like the Fords of that time and the front axles will do you a good job. Don't drive Fords any more so I don't know what the truck you describe might have. Would be driving a Ford (or Studebaker for that matter) if they had been the one that introduced the Cummins in a 350.

That truck being an F350 would have a straight axle with leaf springs. Sucks that the 60 is gone though. The rear would most likely be a Visteon, commonly refered to as a sterling, they are beef. The biggest thing I'd be worried about is how well did they mount the engine/trans? Is it a hack job or was it done nicely. If the truck itself has alot of miles on it, check over the body and interior. Especially check the doors, they are flimsy on a good day (like ours aren't!). just my . 02

Travis. .

I had an 88 F250 4x4 with a 7. 3 that I had visions of doing a 6cyl conversion on. The owners manual said the front was a Dana 50 with IFS (had leafs with reverse arch- little more arch than Dodge); rear was a D70, I think- Travis could be right. Looked beefier than the D70 in Mom's D350, come to think of it. 2wd Twin I-beam was unbeatable, IMO, IF you could find a shop that could do it right. Something about bending/angling stuff right. Kind of like finding a shop that catches bad ball joints on the 2wd Dodge CTDs- good luck.

I think the frame rails are the same width, so mounts shouldnt be much trouble. Plus the Bseries is/ was an option in the F700 range trucks. Again, easy enough to find parts, but did they do go through the trouble? We are talking about Kentucky :D  Almost as bad as MO. There is a 87 2wd Ford around here with a Cummins in it. Took out the gasser in 88, and put in a 160hp B series. About 250K, I think the guy said. Pulling a 4-horse trailer, gets 17-18mpg.

I dont like the pyro probe post turbo- at 40psi, there is really no way to tell how hot/ cool it actually was. I saw 450deg difference at just 25psi in mine.

Did I read that correct: Truck lost its D60 and now has a Dana 44? Even in HD trim (whatever that is) it seems too wimpy for a F350 with a lot of Cummins weight on top of it. I think my '96 Dodge 1500 w/ a 350 V8 in it had a D44 up front. Not enough axle for a CTD IMO.

Also, I thought you said you wanted to trade away your dodge dually since it was too hard to park. So instead, you're getting another dually?

I think I would pass on this trade from what you have told us so far.

P pump turned up and towing heavy. I would ask him to repair the EGT gage with you present and then go for a drive towing his normal load. I bet the temps are higher than he wants you to know. Remember post turbo can be off up to 500 degrees.

HD44 front alxe is a contradiction of terms. That is a low rent throw away axle behind a CTD. It was marginal in W250's with gas engines.

I think the guy has raged it out and is looking to dump it on someone else. Being a stick and family members can't drive it. I do not buy that. Anyone can be taught to drive a stick. Also with the money he has put into it. The 1K for a flat bed is nothing. IMHO his reasons do not add up.

I have gotten burned (badly) in the past cause I was jumping the gun and believed every word some smooth talking guy fed me. All because I just "had to have his truck"

I have been watching this thread since it started, don't get me wrong I like the ford body styles(older models), Mopar Man i would check that truck out really close before trading, if you have any doubts at all i wouldn't go through with the deal, I searched every lot used and new along with these local lot dealers that have everything from a subaru to a 4x4 truck and wasn't able to find a used 12 valve Cummins anywhere, would have killed to get one but opted for the 2000 24 Valve i have now and other than the transmission it has been a dependable truck so far.

I saw your truck pics in the readers rig section and trust me unless the parking area's at the high schools are smaller in Ala. than in Va. I don't see any trouble parking the rig you have now, i live in a rural area up here and have seen anything from a F350 to a dump truck parked in those spots when i was in school, I have even seen this year a kid that has a F350 which has had the cummins conversion sort of wierd to see all the Cummins stickers and decals all over that ford.

I guess what im saying is be careful of this deal unless you check it out close and have someone that knows trucks go with you to see just what this set up the guy has, there may be nothing wrong with the truck at all but seeing it has a Dana 44 up front I wouldn't touch it, due to the fact i know i would end up removing that and replacing it which means more money out of your pocket. This is just my unbiased opinion and don't won't to see a guy get the shaft also.
