There is a Ford Ranger on E-bay with a 4bt, ZF, NP205, Dana 60F, Sterling 10. 25 rear. My questions are: What about a ZF instead of a Getrag? Is it reliable? Could you clock the 205 on the Ford adapter from the drivers side to the passenger's. I asked the guy who is selling it and he said there is a stock adapter that bolts the ZF right to the engine. By the way I have no connection to the seller, I just have never seen this combination.

I thought they had them behind their 7. 3 diesel. It's not the greatest engine but it still a diesel.

Yeah, and they were a failure behind an underpowered low TQ engine also. Both the ford and Chevy manual trans offerings were not up to the task of the V8's let alone the I6. :)

Friend of mine puts Nisson (Datsun) diesels in Rangers. Think he uses eng an trans from donor. don't know about power, but sure gets the mileage. I have a couple Mini Rams with mitsubishi TD's. Rust buckets, looking for good body to put one in. Unless i find a 4 BT first.

I'm running an early ZF5-420 behind my 6bta, and wouldn't recomend it. The later ZF5-470 is supposed to be a little stouter, but I would still be suspect of it's ability to withstand the torque that a 6bt can produce. I know that my trans is getting louder and louder on a basically stock 180hp engine.

If you are going to spend the money on a ZF why not just pop for a NV4500. Seems like it would cost the same or even less after all is said and done. Truthfuly I wish I would have bit the bullet and went with a NV4500, or NV5600 when I did my conversion.

I have heard good things about the ZF trannies

A good friend and mechanic who was the lead tech at the Ford dealership and own 2 Cummins Dodges told me the ZF transmission was as strong as anything. Theye are supposedly complex to work on but Ford manuals have always been known to be strong I've heard you can't kill a T-19? Anyway There are adaptors on the bread vans that were E350's that would mate a small bell housing Ford transmission ZF, t-19, etcc. to a Cummins. I have seen adaptors on ebay. Here are a couple.

eBay Motors: Cummins 4bt 3. 9 6bt 5. 9 ford style engine adapter plate (item 230178828385 end time Oct-15-07 13:09:06 PDT)

eBay Motors: Cummins Ford bellhousing 4bt 6bt slave and throwout arm (item 230178852556 end time Oct-15-07 14:41:44 PDT)

My Ford cummins conversion is using the ZF47 this transmission is rated for 470 ft pds of torque about the same as the NV4500 with no issues, I was using the ZF42 rated at 420 ft pds of torque with the engine in stock form 180,000 miles on the transmission with this engine & it handled it fine, but with the engine mods I have since upgraded to the the ZF47, without being on a dyno I'll only throw out a rough figure of 275 hp, & 550 ft pds torque, this transmission has been in for 5000 miles runs & sounds fine still
