Diesels in M1 Abrams

What a shame and to think I almost bought one. I had the family deal which in turn gives you a $2000 below invoice price, but even at that I could not do it. I must say that the crew cab was very nice, but revving a diesel is not my cup of tea.

I'll stick with the Cummins thank you... ... ... :D

THANK YOU!!

I have a friend who's thinking about the new Ford, and I've been trying to keep him up on the problems. I like un-biased info, because he knows I'm a loyal Cummins fan. (So does everybody else who see's 2 of them in the driveway :D )

I'm sure there are a lot of them that are fine, but the problems with them all sound MAJOR. It's a shame Ford is having such problems, because they sound like they're on thin ice.

Might be down to the big 2 before long.

Just take him over to the 6. 0 forum at www.thedieselstop.com there are plenty of unbiased opions there. You can hear it straight from the owners mouth. I don't want anyone to think I am bashing them, but they are having alot of problems. I would consider waiting a year or two before buying one.

Funny that international has been running this motor for close to 2 years in there trucks and not having near the problems as Ford. Whats that tell you?

Navistar has been running those engines for over two years but at 235hp. Ferd wants to up the hp and now things are breaking left and right.

I'm real happy I got a Cummins.

Sounds like to me Ford put pressure on the this new diesel. They did not want to fall behind the 03 Dodge CTD. So they must have cut a few corners to achive this. Ford always has to have the biggest horsepower and cid. Now you can add the biggest headache.

Yeah from what I gather the 6. 0 has been in production for several years in a low rev 230hp application. And they havent had much trouble with it. I think your right its the hp wars. Well the 305 cummins seems alright save for a little surging. New fuel system is a little jumpy I guess. They will have the programming bugs out and she will outshine the competition.

The 7. 3 pre powerstroke was decent. The 6. 9 was even better. Not alot of umphh but reliable and without the headaches. My pah has a pre powerstroke with 185k on it. NO cackle or bad injectors or fuel in oil. None of the fun stuff.

Even the isuzu diesel was pretty darn good. But chevy had to screw with it.

I hope chrysler keeps its grubby hands off the cummins.

If you really read some of the posts from the 6. 0 guys over in the dieselstop forums, they are getting 9 mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most are getting around 13... .

They had a choice to buy the Terd...

I think I'll make up a little sign and put it in the back window.

"Anybody seen any 6. 0's Lately?"

That should get some reactions from them Furd 7. 3 guys.

Got a new issue of Powerstroke Registry in the mail yesterday. I was reading section called "From the desk of Tim Stoer". He is the Ford S/D marketing manager. He was talking about the new Auto Show season. I don't know when this was written in relation to when this was printed.

Something I thought was odd was a couple of the things he said.

" We delivered the technology in the All-New 32 valve 6. 0L Powerstroke and the 5spd TorqShift Auto transmission less than 12 mths. after it was first shown to the public in Detroit. The feedback recevied thus far has been overwhelmingly positive from our dealers, customers, and the media. "

" As I stated above, the bottom line is people love this new powertrain. To date 6. 0L Powerstroke S/D's have one numerous awards such as Ward's 10 Best Engines (only diesel), Trailer Boats Tow Vehicle of the year, Texas H/D Pick-up truck of the year. I'm sure there will be more to come. Early media reports have clearly stated the 6. 0L PSD is the clear favorite as the towing/ hauling leader in the segment. "

" As of this writing, we only have 25,000 7. 3L PSD S/D's left in stock. Don't wait if you want one of the last ones. "

I hope this was written really early before all these problems started shownig up. If it wasn't, I'll feel sorry for the people who unknowingly get suckered in buying such a POJ. We all know it isn't in the news ( at least not around here) like the tire problems were.

Hope someone doesn't pull a fast one, in an intersection, in front of a big truck and get nailed broadside when the motor quits and won't restart.

I almost bought one of these! It's like looking at car wreck, I can't help watching but I feel bad for the victims. It's getting so bad the techs are setting up a website to discuss problems with this new PSD. See here.

I've heard from one person that Ford is planning to can the HEUI system and use the HPCR systems like GM/Dodge. This may happen as soon as 2004 or maybe 2005.

Its so easy to win truck of the year or engine of the year. Just spill a ton of money on advertising and anybody will kiss there butt.

"Here everybody! Looks great on paper dosen't it? This is what the truck should/will do when they hit the streets! Why would anyone want anything else?"

Hey Jeff! As an Advertising Executive I resemble that. :D Just Kidding, pretty ridiculous isnt it?

It really is sad that the Ford owners are getting reamed with the problems in their new 6. 0. The V8s have had problems- PSD and their laundry lists, Dmaxes cracking/ warping heads and blocks, warping cranks, etc. the Cummins was proven to withstand 300+ hp a while ago. I think the other two are just jealous because the Cummins IS such a strong and dependable engine. But... . it has a lot heavier design; it was MADE for high power & torque output. there were 250hp versions of the B series 15-20 years ago, when the off brands were well under 200 in stock form.

I say, let them buy more Brand F & Gs. That way, when I come along later to buy a used one, every person that went to a V8 will have made the used CTD a few pennies cheaper, by the law of supply and demand, anyway. Several thousand people adds up quick.

I have a 7. 3 PSD and some 24v CTDs, and my best friend has a 6. 5 and a D-Max. We got t-boned last month in the D-Max, so he rented a 6. 0 for the duration. IF they can ever keep them together, those things flat haul a**, and the 5spd slushbox is really nice (if you like automatics). HOWEVER, with a 4,300 or 4,400 RPM redline, I don't think the torque is there to be a serious heavy tow vehicle.

I have been deeply involved in the HEUI problems with 7. 3 (that is why we now have a fleet of CTDs) and let me assure you that Ford has no ability or intention of supporting that engine in the field, and I somehow can't imagine how such an incompetent technical resource will somehow become able to deal effectively with the new engine. There's a reason why a company with the best selling trucks in the world are loosing their shirt (OK their shareholders' shirts).

Count your blessings.

So the wife and I are at our local Ford/Toyota dealer looking at Toyotas for her and I made some off the cuff comment about my Dodge. The salesman says, "well of course I'm a blue oval guy and if you want to feel what a REAL diesel feels like just take a test drive in one of our new Ford diesel trucks" and then goes on to site the hp/torque numbers. So I asked if he knew where the torque curve sat in relation to RPM... ... huh? I then asked if Ford has had any problems so far with their new diesel... ... "nope, not aware of one single problem" I said well that's good to hear, but I think I actually prefer the old in line six design of the Cummins. He said why settle for an old six when you could have a V-8? I didn't say much but thought I wouldn't buy a car from this ass if he was the last salesman on the planet.

No surprise there. I have an uncle who sells High-end cars and he could sell an ice -cream cone to an Eskimo when it's -90* out in the dead of winter and convince him it'll warm him up. He even took his mom on a car deal and bragged about it to his co-workers. She still doesn't know.
