1st Gen 4x4 Winter Beater

I could care less about drag racing but I'd bet someone a steak dinner it will run circles around the new 1000 lb ft engine. Gearing plays a bigger role in getting the load moving than hp and torque ratings, but then again it's just not as flashy.

But I will say im glad Ram dropped the stupid mandatory 3.42 gears in anything other than a DRW.
Talk about a multi year brain fart!

Agreed on all accounts. I can't believe that Ram hasn't jumped on the 10-speed bandwagon. I'm sure it will be coming soon. It will be a talking point for the other manufacturers and I'm sure Ram will correct that situation in time.

I'm going to say something that I'm probably catch flack for.......but I'm also unimpressed with the latest tow numbers from all 3 manufacturers. 35100# vs. 35500# vs. what ever insane # Ford announces. Other than a couple of guys here on TDR, how many people will actually ever come close to needing that towing capacity and/or have the ability to handle that load if they do. Last time I checked, there are companies called Peterbilt, Freightliner, International, Mack, etc. to handle those types of loads. Enough is enough already with these numbers.

Very valid point on the tow #'s. If needing those #'s, a used medium duty or class 8 could be had for a lot less coin.

'Work' is what moves a vehicle; torque is work. Lower trans gearing increases applied torque; higher differential gearing increases applied torque. A torque converter mostly preserves HP across it; some HP is lost to heat. A high-HP, high-RPM input to a TC will produce almost as much HP at a lower-RPM output, but with a lot more torque. (Of course, it all depends on the TC's design.)

My 1974 F-350 dually is rated 10k gvw, talk about out dated. I fully expect to see Ram and GM to follow Ford's F-450 pickup. It is still rated a class 3 truck but has class 4 running gear. 43k GCW for a pickup blows my mind.

HERE WE GOOOOOO!
I’m too sleepy right now to look up the Ram 6.4 top rating. This new Ford mill don’t have ratings yet, correct?
Did GM throw down their hand too soon?

It's actually been out (the engine release) for several months. This engine alongside GM's new MD platform was a joint venture with Navistar.

I will say I am surprised manufacturers are not turbo charging these HD truck engines. What an animal you would have with about 8-10 psi on one of these big boys.

Turbo GDI isn't going away anytime soon. And, as you said, I'm surprised that it hasn't made its way in to this segment yet.

The new 3.5 ecoboost V6 is using port injection in conjunction with the direct injection to hopefully deal with that problem. I'm assuming that technology will make its way to their entire GDI family.

By the way, I just watched a 2018 3.5L Crew Cab F150 4x4 like mine run Mid 12's on nothing but an SSI tune. That's stock air box, exhaust, etc. That is crazy fast for 5000+# brick and 213 cubic inches. With that kind of power potential, I'm hooked on these things even with their shortcomings.

Last May I decided to add a truck to my collection and decided on the '18 F-250 XLT W/6.2 and 3.73 gears. As of right now I'm very pleased with the performance, ride, load capacity, trans and avg. 14.3 MPG. I wasn't overly impressed with test driving the Ram and Chevy equal and went with the Ford. As to the new Ford 7.3...Nah... but then again I do have an issue with the "A" model of anything.;)

Other than my door lock issues, I've been very impressed with my 2018 Ford. Top to bottom a well thought out unit.

Jgillott, how do you like your F150 3.5L? I'm going to need a light duty pickup for one of my guys...no heavy hauling or pulling.

Generally, I am extremely happy with the truck. I have over 10k on it with lots of towing and it has responded very well. Excellent fuel mileage and the power is amazing.

The big issue I have with it is the well known frozen door lock issues. Other than that, I love it.

I've been running an ongoing thread on it here on TDR. You are welcome to read it over.

I saw a video interviewing the lead engineer on the design of this engine. 6 bolt mains, Port fuel injection, read NOT Direct Injection, piston oil squirters, and the internals - pistons, rings, etc. are of the same material used in their turbo charged engines. Think we may just see a lightly boosted version of this engine in the future?

I hope so, the way it is designed now it is a gas guzzler like in the old days.
Not really sophisticated.
