Edge just came out with the Insight... Ie: DashHawk but better, It already has the provisions for the egt probe built in. All your have to do is buy the probe from them. But I'm sad, I was looking at this for my truck and dude said no dice... . My truck isn't CanBus, whatevere that is? What does the attitude monitor run off of for the 03 then? Thay are the same thing if you ask me? Any Insight into this new toy? :-laf

The new trucks have a wiring style called can-bus while the older trucks have OBDII. The two systems are incompatible.



Not very technical but now that I have posted this some one will reply with a better answer that will explain what I said better while pointing out where I was wrong.

That's not exactly true. All trucks comply with OBD-II, which is the EPA-mandated "On-Board Diagnostics" protocol. Every vehicle for sale in the US since 1996 is required to provide OBD-II communications.

Whereas OBD-II is a protocol, CAN (Controller Area Network) is a computer network. Think of CAN like a LAN, except in your vehicle. Each of the computers talks to the others via a computer bus.

The idea of CAN is the ability to reduce the number of wires required in the vehicle, and hence reduce weight a little. It also permits more security (computers must log on to the vehicle network, and the manufacturer can therefore block outside computers from getting in).

I was under the impression that even '03 trucks ran a CAN bus architecture, but apparently they don't. I think maybe it wasn't until 2006 that they switched over to CAN.

Now I have a few questions of my own. Will the OBDII readers work on my rig? I thought I read somewhere they would not. Thought they had to be OBDIII now?



All I really know for sure is with the can-bus system in my 06 I can not add any new equipment to the stock radio. At least not without a spendy adaptor.

As far as I've read, OBD-III doesn't exist other than conceptually right now. All vehicles are required to comply with OBD-II standards, so OBD-II readers will still work with CAN-equipped vehicles.

The CAN bus is a newer, faster bus. The older 03-05??? use this:

"Data exchange between modules is achieved by

serial transmission of encoded data over a single wire

broadcast network. The wire colors used for the PCI

data bus circuits are yellow with a violet tracer, or

violet with a yellow tracer, depending upon the application.

The PCI data bus messages are carried over

the bus in the form of Variable Pulse Width Modulated

(VPWM) signals. The PCI data bus speed is an

average 10. 4 Kilo-bits per second (Kbps). "

So mine is a can bus based system? And anyone with and attitude monitor in a 03 or 04, does it plug into the obdII port under the dash?
