Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Forgot to ad oil???

I have a 2002 HO complete motor... Block, head, ecm, injector pump, all fuel lines, manifold... The motor was taken out of the truck because a no named lube place forgot to put oil in it after an oil change. It started to knock and the dealer replaced it. I just got it, and would like to know what the next step is to make a mean machine. Stuff like; Can I just bore the motor and grind the crank??? Any other sugestions?? Or how much is the stuff on the block worth?? IE Cummins ECM, VP44, Head, Valve Cover, Manifold, Block itself? Any suggestions would be great!!!

Have some one tear it down and see how bad the damage is. If the crank is bad or it has damaged the block you have some parts to sell, if the crank can be fixed you have a good rebuildable core engine. Watch e bay there are several engines of different years on there that should give you a idea of the value of parts/engine. I would guess if it is rebuildable $2500 or maybe more.

Unless it was run long or hard without oil, chances are all that will be bad are crank and bearings - other parts can usually run quite a bit longer without damage in that scenario - could be a pretty inexpensive repair...

Since these engines have flat tappet cams, take a close look at the cam lobes and lifter faces. Any scuffing now will mean rapid wear in the future. The turbo bearings may be toast if any load was put on the engine without oil - depending on how long it ran, just idling could have taken them out.



If someone was planning on major BOMBing, it would certainly make a nice "core" to start from!
