Hello out their

You may have already discussed this, but every once in a while, I will get 2 or 3 duplicate posts when submitting a reply.

I do not believe I have this "Icon Legend"... for those who have it showing up can you take a screen shot to show me what to look for.

You have to go into the forums to see it, bottom left hand side.

Steve,

I'm becoming more frustrated with this new website every day.

The reply function hangs up 100% of the time if I begin drafting a long-winded post that takes me five or more minutes to complete and review. When I finally hit SEND it simply hangs up and gives me a message stating the Turbodiesel Register website is not responding. Everytime! Not occasionally.

Second, the EDIT function is almost as disfunctional. I have the bad habit of rapidly keying in verbose posts then quickly scanning them before sending. I frequently overlook a typo, misspelled word, or a long sentence where I lost my train of thought and left it grammatically confusing or simply incomplete. Sometimes I think of another thought I forgot to add.

Sometimes the delete button will not allow me to reopen my last post. More frequently it allows me to open it but once I edit the post and try to save/send it the website hangs up again.

Please don't tell me it is my system. It never happened with the former TDR software and does not happen on other websites I frequent.

THE NEW SOFTWARE HAS UNRESOLVED FLAWS!!!!!!

Harvey,

It's a performance issue. Give them time to tweek it. I'm having similar issues. Just keep letting them know is all it takes. These forum softwares take a while to adjust so they perform well.

Harvey - what browser and version are you using so I can try to replicate your issues. I haven't had that report from anyone else and I haven't seen it but I'm not typing very many long messages. Is this happening on new threads where yours is the first post as well as on replies or only on one or the other? Is it happening at all different times of the day or do you have a specific time of day that you tend to do your long posts? (coffee in the morning for example)

Steve,

I am using Windows 7 in a two year old Dell 64 bit computer with huge memory capability and IE 9. The hangups happen mostly when I am commenting on existing threads but I say that because I respond to threads written by other more frequently than to my own.

I am a heavy computer user but a lightweight on the technology. I don't know the factors to consider. I can't say whether it happens more or less frequently at times of the day but believe it happens at all times.

Steve,

After posting the above I opened it to add this edit:
Edit: My wife knows much more than I do. She works in an office at Texas Tech with lots of programmers which she has access to. The says it is a word limit issue but that is only her opinion and I can only pass it on.

Interestingly, this post, which took me several minutes to complete with her providing the technical answers and it posted asap. Now I'll see if the edit posts.

The TDR software ignored my repeated hits on the send button.

Testing for an edit

The edit uses Javascript to function Harvey - I was able to edit and save no problem (returned in way less than a second). Posting a quick reply also uses Javascript to function. Try this - do an edit and post a long response and when you do it click on the "go advanced" button before you type - that will take you to a full screen editor which doesn't use Javascript and see if that works fine for you. I'm betting it will. Then it's a matter of us figuring out why Javascript isn't working well on your PC - could be a security settings, anti-virus software, etc.

I'll try it and report a little later, Steve.

Edit:

Okay Steve, this is an attempted edit using the Go Advanced feature. I don't have anything to write so will waste a lot of superfluous words discussing nothing of consequence.

I am not familiar with Javascript although I remember seeing it many times over the years of using a computer. My wife says it is a programming language - that's new to me - but perhaps my system is hindering that someway.

I'll try now to save this edit.

Steve,

You were apparently correct as always. The edit function worked immediately.

Does this new software use javascript where the other older software did not?

Some way my system must either lack javascipt capability or it is being hindered as you suggested. I'll get my wife to help me locate it if it is an installed program and try to renew or update it if that is possible. We'll try to figure it out before I ask for help.

Thanks.

Edit:

Hmmm. I searched my list of installed programs and find Java which was updated in mid-July but no Javascipt. Is Javascript the language your software is using but it not ordinary programming I would or should have?

Please advise me how to cure this.

First of all, a big THANK YOU, Steve, for all the effort you put into what is often a thankless job, I'm sure. Now my gripe/request: if there is any way at all in the near future to make the old links in posts work again, PLEASE implement it. Searching the forums for info on previously addressed problems is getting more and more difficult as more and more threads are added every day--especially for those of us with older rigs that are slowly but surely getting marginalized as more and more people upgrade and the focus shifts to newer-model trucks.

I cannot emphasize enough how valuable the links in older posts have been to me time and time again when trying to find info in my searches. If these links are no longer working, the ability to tap into the wealth of information on this site has just taken a serious hit. If this has already been fixed and I missed it, please let me know. I understand and appreciate your decision to maintain security on this site, and I hate to gripe, but this is really a bad deal. Again, thanks for the great job you and the rest of the staff do with this site and the magazine.

Steve, I like the looks of the new site, but I have a question. When I click on the "Forum" at the top of the page it takes me to the forum list. On the old site I could click on the icon to the left of a forum and disable it so it doesn't show when I hit "new posts". Is that option still available? I tried it and it marks them as read. It saves time for me to not have to see posts in forums I'm not interested in.

Thanks, keep up the good work!

That was custom code that I had written to allow that. I'm going to rewrite it for this version of vB too but I haven't been able to get to it yet - it is in the plans though. I do have the political forum excluded from View New Posts and View Daily Posts so you should not be seeing those there. Your previous settings are still saved and will come back when I get it rewritten.
