Maybe I can get a response over here? How many of you have replaced your own injectors, DIY? I just replaced four of mine with the Bosch 275's; got a little late so I'll do the other two in the morning. Working from the front to the back 1 & 2 looked in good shape. When I got to three the needle was all gritty, which I have now determined was carbon; #4 also had carbon but not as much. I ran a magtnet over some of the grit and nothing stuck so it doesn't seem to be metal shavings. I had an oil analisys done about 3k ago and nothing unusual, all the numbers ok; soot <1. 0, fuel <1. 0, iron 27ppm, silicon 14ppm, aluminum 8ppm, tbn 12. 7, no solids. I haven't seen the last two injectors.
What is your opinion? P. S. #1 & #2, the cleanest, were the the ones that seemed to be torked down the best. The other two seemed to loosen to easy. Think I might have had oil seeping down through them?

ARAR--today I put in the DDIII's(w/HVAC's tutorage) and the old ones were as clean as a whistle--you might be correct in the oil thing-hopefully the more experienced will chime in and give you some more info---chris

When I replaced mine all were heavily fouled. I'd like to know why too. There wasn't any grit though, it all seemed to be a heavy carbon buildup. I started using a fuel additive so the next time I pull my injectors we'll see what they look like. Sounds very strange that your fouling was not uniform though.

A build up of carbon on the injectors is normal. Don't use a wire brush to clean carboned up injectors.

If one injector is sigificantly cleaner or sootier than the others, then you might have a problem.

DOC is right. I would suggest you had a couple of "leakers" that weren't seating correctly. We call them "mikey jordans". (they dribble before they shoot)

At 50K mine had some carbon built up on the tips but it was even on all 6. I would say that the layer of carbon was less than . 005" thick, there was just enough to make a layer. I would think that the guys that tow heavy and often would have less and commuters would have more carbon. Mine were all tight in the holes, so no oil was getting in the cylinders. I would guess that oil getting past the injectors would be the cause of uneven builup.
