I lost 3rd gear 2 weeks ago in my nv4500 & had my trans rebuilt, but when I got it back from the mechanic who installed the trans..... it still shifted hard. I thought something else was wrong with it. I pulled the shifter to see if I could find the binding problem. When shifting into 3rd,5th & reverse... . It felt like the shifter was rubbing on something & binding up. I found that it was a easy fix... . the plate that is beneath the shifter [spacer] that has the 4 sleeves going through it needed adjustment. It was off center & only about 1/16" which made the shifts feel notchy. I adjusted it & tried it 3 times before finally getting it where it needed to be. I always thought that if it was installed... . it was good, but it is unbelievable how much difference it made. I have nice smooth shifts now & not even a little binding at all. Just thought I'd share my experience with you guys.

I just talked to a friend & told him what my fix was for hard shifts & he said that he had that problem once. His was a little different though... . he had a new clutch installed & the mechanic forgot to install the 4 sleeves in the plate that the shifter bolts to. When the sleeves weren't installed it let the rubber compress & the shifter was binding real bad. Just thought I'd throw some more info out for the post. I've heard that the slave cylinder can do the same thing when it gets weak... anyone have similar problems?
