All this time, I thought my tank was full and that I had another 9 gallons left, when the foaming of the filler tube causes a painfully and sometimes embarrassing slow fill at the diesel pump. I saw a thread a while back where some were talking about experimenting with cutting the overflow/breather tube, but am not aware of the results/solution. Any fix for this problem amongst the wise, experienced, and brave souls gathered here?

Fix

GSevison, I Did Remove Fuel Tank Last Week, Ran On Empty Until I Couldn't See How It Could Go Any Farther. Had 5 Gallons Left In Tank. Found That Vent Tube Only Protrudes Into Tank 2 Inches And Is Easily Removed On The Inside By Reaching Through The Suction And Float Manhole With A Pocket Knife.

Tank Was Spotless Inside, No Water Or Trash. 6500k Miles On Truck.

After Seeing Filter Screen On End Of Suction I Wouldn't Be Afraid To Run Truck Without Filter Other Than Removing Water.

Took 40 Gallons Diesel To Fill Tank. Crammed. If You Notice, The Filler And Vent Tube Enter The Tank Approx. 4 Inches Below The Top Rear Of Tank. Only Way To Totally Solve Problem Would Be To Install Vent At Highest Part Of Tank. When I Filled Tank I Pulled Front Tire On 6 Inch Ramp,Seemed To Be Some Faster.

I Filled Sons 4WD With No Problem. Could Be Because Front Of Truck Is Higher.

Thanks KTaylor.

Atleast it is comforting to know that I have a safety factor left when the tank shows empty given your information. Guess maybe the rating 34 gal for SB, and 35 for LB means till the auto shut off works the first time.

Thanks for the detailed reply

I still haven't heard an answer to the original question. Is there a way to modify the vent tube to make the filling of the last few gallons any easier? I know on TDI's you can remove the vent button, and squeeze an extra 2 gallons in quite easily...

Hm I always seem to be able to fill about 33 gallons when low fule light comes on without any real extra effort (IE same as on my 96 and 92) The last gallon (or last dollar actually, I always fill to the dollar I hate change) foams and fills kinda at half "throttle" but upto that last dollar it goes just fine. I had played with keep adding until I actually have fuel to the "brim" and it was only another gallon to fill to top. I decided not to do that again after getting home and having diesel overflowing from vent when the sun came out; so now I shut off after the foaming starts to leave expansion room.
