I found a 1995 2500 auto(i guess ya gotta take what ya can) 4x4 with 105,000 miles. It looks nice, rust free and all but i wanna check it out under the hood. what kind stuff should i look for? Are the transmissions as bad as they say or is it just a myth from 30 some years ago? I'd rather have a manual, but hey a Cummins is a Cummins and manuals are pretty darn rare around here, let alone a reg cab diesel. Thanks.

check the front passenger side bolt on the AFC housing (just behind where the injection lines come out of the pump). if it looks like it has a slot (like a flathead screwdriver) or bolt head then somebody's been in there. doesn't mean they've bombed it but they've been in there for some reason.

check the air filter. you could take along a mid-sized screw driver and take the intake hose of the air horn and see if it has oil or dirt on it by running your finger along the inside. pop the intake hose off going to the turbo and spin the turbo to see if it has any play or makes noise while spinning.

if ya can take atleast one other person with ya, I've found it helps cause I can miss things and others people well see them. 4 or 6 eyes are better than 2. and then while your test driving it they can talk to the dealer or go with ya and give ya another opinion on the truck.

When you test drive a vehicle (any vehicle) have someone follow behind you to make sure it goes straight down the road. I was the victim of a bent frame eventhough when i would let go of the steering wheel it did not turn one way or the other. However the frame was bent and I did not discover until it was to late. $600 bucks to staighten!!!!!! and that was a friend who did it for me.
