Well i went under the hood and tinkered with the new to me 12v yesterday. The #10 plate was slid almost all the way back. So for fun, i moved it all the way forward. Moved the AFC housing all the way forward, and the star wheel all the way forward. (the afc and starwheel were already full forward, the plate is really the only thing i changed position on. )

Well the power and egt's are WAY up, but the clutch can't hold the power. I had planned on moving everything full forward, then moving it back to a level that was acceptable for smoke and egts. But to my surprise, i have no off boost smoke at all. I can push it to the floor at low rpm, and it acts like it's gettin no fuel at all until i finally get to about 6-8psi. Then it comes alive in a major way. It smokes way more at full boost then it does at no boost. So i would think the afc needs to be adjusted some, but it's already full forward. What's going on?

Any help would be much appreciated. These 12v's are very new to me. I'm thinking the afc spring kit that's in it has too stiff of a spring???? Or am i totally lost.

Thanks,

Chris

must be too stiff a spring (too long? )

with my housing forward and the spring adjusted forward, there's probably 1/2" slack! LOL! it goes without saying that when I romp on it, it dumps a nice cloud of black smoke! :D

Forrest,

That's what i was thinking, but my assumption was based on my very limited understanding of how these motors work. Thanks for the info.

So where does one get a shorter or weaker spring, assuming that's what i need?

Originally posted by Mamboalaska try turning the star wheel all the way in the other direction for your low rpm smoke. you may have gone the wrong way first, I did.

Mamboalaska,

I turned the top of the starwheel towards the motor, which moved it as far towards the front of the truck as possible. I'm pretty sure this is the correct direction for maximum low boost fueling. Is it?

Yeu,it sounds like you need to get the spring kit from TST. it sure made mine smoke. It'll really pi$$ alot of people off in traffic when I punch it.

Chris,

As I understand it, there is also an adjustment on the back of the afc housing which affects fueling before any boost is achieved.

It is a screw adjustment with a locking nut. I have not tried it yes but I will soon. My problem is just the opposite. I have a #6 plate and the smoke is driving me nuts. Various folks (including the guys at TST) have mentioned this adjustment to change fuleing under no boost and low boost conditions. Perhaps someone else can jump in here with more info.

I slid my #12 all the way forward and it was a little bit unnerving when it hit 6-8 psi power was coming on fast and furious. Is that safe I slid it back a little cause I was worried about destroying something.

smoke

How much boost do you get at higher rpm?

When stock mine ran 22 lbs, when I installed a TST #11(stock location) it came with a new wastegate fitting that brougt the boost up to 34lbs. Low boost and high fuel = smoke If you are not getting enough boost, check your fitting, tubing, and intercooler hoses.

good luck--Larry

The way to turn the star wheel is to take tension off the spring which is with the wheel towards the front of the engine. AFC springs can be had from TST or Piers and other places also.

Thanks all. Seems like i just need less spring in the AFC. It's adjusted as far as it can go, in the direction that takes stress off the spring. As is, it takes me forever to get 6 or 8psi boost. I'm not looking to fog out the street, but would like to have a little more power off the line.

Thanks again for all the help,

Chris

chris, try turning that screw onthe back of the afc housing in until it is flush with the nut that is the preboost screw starts to deliver the fuel b4 the boost comes on. i am in the same boat you are, after doug fireringed my truck and installed my 215 injectors i can hit 40+ psi of boost and i have less smoke now than i did when i had the stock 180 injectors in and could only hit 34psi. i know i am getting more fuel to the motor, bc it feels a ton faster and smoother plus the obvious that more boost +more fuel=more power. if you have any ?'s dont be afraid to call, i will help if i can.
