I just picked this truck up last night - the previous owner mentioned a pan gasket leak and a front cover leak. I start searching for it and find the oil leak and notice behind the injector pump I have a Bosch piece part # 2-425-209-158 that has four bolt holes with zero bolts. I have no clue if it was unbolted or they rattled out. What part is this? I called dodge and they had no clue and I don't have a service manual yet.

Not sure exactly what you are referring too, but the injector pump is retained to the gear housing by studs in the gear housing and nuts on the stud that hold the pump flanges to the housing. Injec. pump to housing gasket is a funky o-ring of sorts.

You maybe referring to the AFC (aneriod in other cummins circles) near the rear of the pump. The housing would flop around big time with no bolts.

The ones on the fuel shut down solenoid have likely loosened or been stripped at some point. You will need a metric m6*1. 0 helicoil if this is what your inference was. .

The oil leaks from the front are likely the front crank seal behind the vibration damper, KDP (killer dowel pin), if the gear housing is cracked from the dowel pin, usually the fan mount must be removed to see the damage, or bad oil pan gasket.

Good luck with the new ride.

That is your AFC cover. Look under it and you'll find the cam plate for your injection pump.

Andy,

I bought a 96 12v 4x4 club cab 5-speed. The two third gens are still in the fleet. Along with 2 first gens:D

It was on the back of the Injector pump. bolted it down, no more leaks - anywhere!:)

But... . I bolted it down, went out and the truck ran very solid like it did before. Came to a stop, went back through the gears and power is down and the throttle feels stiff. It runs fine, just doesn't feel like I am getting full throttle.

Other than that, I'm very happy with this truck. I got it for an absolute steal because he was worried about dumping money into fixing leaks, clutch, etc and is a customer.

that is because the afc controls how much you can push the throttle until boost comes up. You can open up the allen plug on top and rotate the star wheel. I believe to loosen up the restriction you rotate toward the engine but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Then wouldn't that happen immediately? I drove the truck approx 10 miles before the power reduction kicked in.

Also, if I'm around 1/2 throttle, the truck moves pretty good, if I hold it to the floor it doesn't pull as hard:confused:

Did all 2nd gen 12v's have cats?

Yes to the cat and my truck has a sweet spot in the throttle about half way down. Also seems to just pull like a runaway locomotive if I ease the throttle to the floor rather than mash it down quickly.

The throttle "stiffness" would probably be due to the afc star wheel. I'm not sure why it took a few miles to come on. You might try pulling the housing cover off again and sliding the torque plate forward a little bit and you may regain that power.

My 94 had a cat. If his AFC was loose there would have been no "holding the throttle back" until boost comes up. Why it didn't show for a few miles I don't know. While your in there take a grinder to the cam plate and smooth that potruding square ridge back, tapper from the further most rearward flat surface to the flat surface closest to the top. And to finish it off slid it all the way forward in its slotted screw holes. Then get yourself some guages and enjoy the simplicity of a 12 valve. While you have the AFC housing off and the plate slide forward raise the fuel cut off sylinoid to the run position and run the throttle through its full range. Ck to see where it contacts the "cam plate". See the Piers site for adj. if needed.

good luck

Interesting note: The sluggish throttle problem is gone. Truck runs very strong again and smokes enough to cause frequent lane changes from those behind me. I did nothing, so I have no idea what the difference is.

very odd. sounds like there may be more of an issue but if it doesn't do this again then run with it. You'll know something funny is going on if it does this again. Glad it's good for now though.

Supposedly only the fuel pressure was turned up before I purchased this truck. It smokes like a hugely modified truck, is this common place for all 12v's?

The way mine is setup it smokes very little but they can easily be made to smoke like mad. I don't know the p-pump that well to figure out how they turned up pressure but how much do you trust the person you bought it from and are they the original owner?

He was the original. He's a customer of mine. Very trustworthy guy, just not the most performance part minded guy. He paid a mechanic in W. Terre Haute, IN to do the work. Guy supposedly worked for Schied at one point, so your guess is as good as mine what he did. It runs very strong, feels comparable to my 05 in acceleration.
