Found this on the rail-what is it?

While I was removing my injectors the other day I came across this sitting by the rail on the intake. I don't know what it is or if it even came off of something while I was tearing apart the rail, intake, injectors, etc. It looks like some sort of compression fitting. That's the best way to describe it I guess. I thought maybe it was a compression fitting for the fuel lines but there is none. I looked everywhere around where I was working but kind find what it would go to. It does have grooves on the outside of it across from each other like it was once clamped with vice grips or a wrench. Anyone have any idea what it is or where it goes. Hopefully it's something that was just dropped while my motor was out. But it also looks important. Any ideas?

Looks like a spacer to me, possibly goes under one of the fuel line mountings maybe.

Could be a socket retainer from the spring side of a rocker arm. It looks like a small piece in the pic, but it's about the size of what you have there. One of your rocker arms look different than the others?..... assuming you removed them to ease injector removal.

Scratch that spacer thought... how about an insert for the plastic valve cover top??

the retainer is rubber.

It's not the bushing for the plastic valve cover. Someone else said that so I went and checked. All of them are in place in the plastic cover. Plus the bolts that hold it on won't fit through this piece. I like the idea of it might being a spacer for the fuel lines. I'll have to check. But it's pouring out side and I don't want to lift my hood with no valve cover on it. Keep the thoughts coming, I really appreciate them.



As for left over parts. Man, I hate it and always have something left over. I really tried to take my time, mark everything that came off, layed it all out on a table in the garage so I wouldn't lose anything and then this.

When I worked in a shop with multiple techs we would find something like that and put it in an obvious spot for the tech to find and go nuts trying to figure it out.

2 more ideas. .

1) On the blue fuel line insulators, I haven't looked but are there inserts on those maybe??



2) I have never disconnected the electrical on the injectors so don't know this either but could there be a spacer in under the electrical connection at the injector?

It looks like the spacer on the intake Horn that the Map and the heater wires mount too. The wires and covering are large so you need a spacer to separate them to be able to attach to the same bolt without rubbing.

Damn I have had the injectors in and out of my truck twice and I cant say I have had one of "those" loose in my hand or seen one. Could have been attached to something I didn't notice, and stayed put for me though.



I think TWest is probably on the right track, some sort of fastener spacer. If you think about it everything under the valve cover (rockers, injectors etc) and the high pressure lines are in six-packs so to speak, so you or one of us would surely know what it is since there would be six to keep an eye on.

nope its too fat, and too short, looks like some kind of dowl pin for aligning something.

I was just re reading your post and began to wonder if. . you were changing injectors "in" the truck and the "engine out" statement was a while back and its been in the truck running for some time, or you were changing injectors with your engine out of the truck and found that??



The notches in the end would make be think this is a sleeve for under a bolt head so as not to crush the component being tightened. Another thought is if it belongs on the Fleetguard breather mounted under the plastic trim cover.

Motor out means when my motor was out getting built 2 years ago. I'm just now doing the injectors. Though it would be easier to change them with the motor out. LOL. I was thinking maybe was dropped on there during assembly or something. Just trying to think that's all.



transmission was completely done when the TC, VB & Input were done. Just ran out of room listing everything. Trannies holding up great. But am ordering a flexplate today.

Found out where it went. Actually found another one on the ground under the truck today, so I knew something had to be up. They are a retainer type thingy that the bolts for the the breather box (sorry don't know exact name) that mounts on top of the vavle cover. Thanks for all the help you guys. I appreciate it.

Crankcase breather, its a fleetguard product. I bet you feel better now. . left over parts mess with my mind even its one nut.
