If you have one of the earlier 04-05 trucks that lost a belt or two, sounds like there is going to be a new pulley for the generator. It is the overrunning type that has been used on the 3. 8 minivans for a couple of years. It should also reduce some of the shut down chirp. Anyone with a truck built after about June should have one installed from the factory. Curious if anyone that has a June or newer built truck noticed the chirp is gone.

Sag, thanks for the information. Is this going to be a TSB?

After my original belt went at 5400 miles, the replacement belt has had no problems (knock wood :) ) in over 12,000 miles now, although I do check it. It also doesn't chirp as much as the original.

What is an "overrun" pulley?

Is this something that if I take it in and they run the VIN # they will see that it's supposed to be replaced? I have a 04 and had my belt jump off the the pully's on Wednesday, well not all the way off, but the outside of the belt was eatten and you can tell that it had moved over. It scraed the Hell out of me... . Of course I got a New one ASAP, but I don't want to out in BFE and something happen like that again... . Any memeber's out there work at a dealer and answer my question? This is scary...

Exactly. I *think* what Sag means is that there is a TSB coming (about time - it's been 1. 5 years since this starting happening to members' trucks).

I'm sure he'll chime in soon.

I believe there will eventually be a TSB. In the mean time the only way to get the pulley is to order the late 06 generator that has the pulley.

To clarify, the overrunning pulley has a one way clutch that is built in. It locks up to turn the generator, but free wheels the other direction. Pop the hood on any 04-06 minivan with a 3. 8 V6 and you will see the difference. It also takes a special tool to remove and install it.

Have the dealer call STAR and they might be able to get the pulley part number.

I think I'll keep the old 12 valve.

I just did the belt the other day @110,000 miles. Bought a Gatorback about 2 years ago, and felt sorry for the factory part. :-laf It covered enough miles in the toolbox. :D

I could still make out some of the numbers on it.

Cool. Thanks Sag.

And to all the other comments - the idea is not to get rid of the chirp - the idea is to PREVENT the frayed and shredded belts that have happened to some of us.
