Hello guy's,

I just got a new '01. 5 ETH Ram and want to install a better muffler.

I want to just remove the stock muffler and resonator and keep the stock piping, but I don't want it as loud as a straight pipe. :)

Is the walker muffler #21468 a good one?

I had the 21468 on my last truck and I didn't like it. It made the turbo sound odd and kind of gave off a strange whistle (Not the cool turbo whistle) all the time. I won't be putting that muffler on my current truck when I decide to change out the exhaust. Sorry I can't be of more help, I have decided that I will go with a 4-inch exhaust whenever I change from stock.

So... ... I wonder who makes a good muffler that does not cost a fortune?

I even considered taking the stock muffler off and just running the resonator but I don't want it to be too loud.

You could install the 3 inch version MagnaFlow straight-thru muffler that is virtually the same as the one used on certain 4 inch systems. Your local muffler shop could handle that.

call banks, and order just their 4" muffler and clamps, call bully dog and order their tail section, go to napa and get a 3" od to 4"id adapter, it sounds AWESOM

total cost banks,230, bd, 150, napa 5+= less than 400

I did a total 4" system for only a little more, the only needed additional pipe is the turbo down pipe which from bully dog is about 100, you can do the rest with 4" straight stock bought a your local heavy truck parts place

Brassmonkey, how much did this combo cost you?

Is the Magnaflow a good muffler? How does it compare to the Banks muffler?

Thanks.

soup to nuts including install +or- 650 700, you will need a custom muffler guy, who can weld a bracket onto the straight pipe, I like it, the complete banks was +900 plus s&h and install, you can get a magnaflow for about 500+ I believe, but I heard a few people who were not happy with the sound, there was a guy a few weeks ago looking for a resonator to add to his magnaflow, mine has a deep throated baritone sound, not to loud, and not tractor trailerish, almost unnoticable change at idle, I basically have the banks sound at less than 2/3 the cost, because the banks with S&H and install would have been 11-1150

I, too, was concerned about the noise of running a straight pipe with only the resonator. When I called my local muffler shops to inquire about what muffler they suggested they where baffled by my question. It seems that not very many shops get asked to CHANGE the muffler only to cut it off. The owner of the shop I used insisted that I drive his truck to hear what it would sound like sans muffler. That alone sold me on his shop but the sound completed the deal. IMO my interior noise is actually lower until I get a good load on the engine. Sound outside of the truck is great.

I just had my muffler removed and left the resonator they charged me $40 to cut it out and weld a new pipe in. It sounds great not to much louder in the cab but sounds like a semi outside really gets the looks. :D

I have the Walker 21468 & am Happy with it. Th emuffler guy said it might whistle, might not. mine does not and for about $100 including install I found it hard to go wrong. Lowered EGT about 75-100 deg.

So you guy's are saying that if I just take the muffler of and run the resonator it will sound good, but not too loud and drone in the cab?

Is there much drone at a certain RPM?

V6power87,

You could try what I did on a suggestion from Bill K @ DTT. I went to my local Midas shop and had them take out the stock muffler and resonator, and replace it with a Rhino 911 (not sure if this is correct spelling) muffler and 3" straight pipe to fill the gap. The trick is to get the shop to intall the muffler as far back as possible in the gap left by the stock equipment, and install the straigt pipe toward the front. All this out the door for $231. The truck seems to run a little cooler, and has a slight throatier sound. It works for me. Hope this helps, -Ken

If your primary interest in replacing your muffler is to reduce restriction and improve flow, the single best improvement you can make to your system IS to replace the piping, not the muffler itself. The pressure-bent downpipe coming off the turbo is the biggest downfall to the stock Dodge exhaust on these trucks.

This was my solution to the problem. Go to your local truck supply place and buy:

1-3"-4" adapter

4-45 degree mandrel bends-4" size

2-90 degree mandrel bends-4" size

1-4 inch Walker muffler from O'reillys

All of the parts ran about $230. 00 and the "Muffin Shop" here in Lawton, American added the 4 inch pipe and put it all together for $80. 00 labor. Total cost was about $310. 00 and it works great

Well, I do want to improve the flow and lower EGT's a little but I am kinda on a budget after the purchase of the truck itself. :)

When you start adding up the leveling kit, MT tires, mud flap$, etc. I can't dump too much more into it, so a whole new exhaust is out of the question. :(

My '93 was straight piped but I don't want the new truck that loud.

Lost my muffler about 2 weeks ago, and

like the sound:D , I have had the odd

look when sitting at stop light. Geno's

has the replacement pipe... . try it you'll

like it!!

here's my story...

Well I went to the muffler shop and had them stright pipe the whole thing with 3" pipe. Sounds great. Not very load in the cab unless I want it to be.

I heard Okie's truck when he had the ME from Geno's and the resonator, sound good if you don't want to be too load.

Just some ideas.

On my '97 2500 I put a straight pipe 4" with no Resinator or Muffler and it was super loud. I then reinstalled the Resinator after modifing it to 4" and it quieted it down nicely. total cost at the local big rig shop for the 4" pipe and elbow was about 150. I had a friend help install it at his auto service shop.
