Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) freeze plug out!!

Gentleman; i found out this AM that one of my freeze plugs that is located on the pass. side of the head at the very rear( it is one of the small ones like the one next to the lifting ring on the front of the engine) is leaking . the Dealer wants to take the head OFF!!! just because it is a little tight to get at, anyone have any input on how I can tell how to so it W/O taking the head off. I know that if they do the fix their way something else is going to screw up. I`m not completely out of service but I have to keep an eye on the coolant level. There has got to be a WAY!. TIA

Had the exact same problem back in Sept. My dealer was able to pull and replace the old freeze plug. How difficult it was for them, I do not know, but there was no mention of a head removal. You have access to another dealer?

I had the exact same problem with my truck when it was brand new. One of the extremely small freeze plugs was not set correctly and it leaked antifreeze. My dealer set a new plug with out removing the head. It is possible, Snap-On makes a tool for setting the plug.



BTW, I have a 56 series block. I think this is a common problem. To see if there is a pattern, I have Engine SN# 56789879, what is yours. maybe there was a run of these with similar ESN#'s.
