Little secret about this truck

Truck Island Pumps, Filtered at the Pump?

The company that owns the Freightliner truck manufacturing plant in Cleveland says its is in the process of notifying workers they may be laid off.

“Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is in the process of notifying production workers across DTNA’s North American manufacturing facilities of a potential layoff in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act,” a statement from Daimler North America’s corporate offices in Portland, Ore. , said.

The company said it would release more information on Thursday.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers to notify the state when they plan to lay off more than 500 workers or a third of their workforce.

About 2,100 people work at the Cleveland plant. Another 2,900 work at Daimler plants in Gastonia and Mount Holly, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Are they discontinuing production of a certain truck or equipment? Thats like an entire communities worth of families losing an income, heartbreaking news to all involved.

Come on Harvey dont let us down let's hear it, it's WHO'S FAULT????

That's Cleveland NORTH CAROLINA? Not OHIO? Is this a union plant? It's a real shame these people will suffer. Don't worry WALMART is waiting for you down on Barlow road. They'll help you right out.

Prayers are with those in peril.

It must be NC we are within 2 hours of Cleveland OH and get a couple of their news channels (when you live in the sticks 2 hours away is still local news :-laf) Thats big news and there has been nothing of it posted. To the best of my knowledge, there is not a manufacturing site of that magnitude anywhere around here. Ford engine plant closed up years ago and the Lordstown GM has cut way back no Freightliner that Im aware of.

It's pretty silly to blame me or Wal-Mart, Wayne. Most of you who are now complaining voted for this destruction.

I levy no blame. Sorry to hear you accept it. All I implied was that Walmart is a high volume employer.

**Edit. It is a union plant. You are correct Harvey. Union memberships ARE going down. Being you brought this to light in another thread, what do you suppose we do for these people?

Do you know anybody affected by these potential layoffs? I hope they can find an alternative.

BTW, I saw the forecast temp in the top right corner, how depressing! :{

I'm hoping those affected have talents that can be applied at the other facilities in the area.

I sure hope so. In our area small fraction of those people would be lucky to find any other type of skilled labor work. Most of the factories/plants are fully staffed and are so overwhelmed with people turning in resumes that most arent even filed for later review they wind up straight in the trash.

Here is the announcement from one year ago where they were adding a third shift.

Now it seems that they might have over forecasted demand??? Or is it something else??

I know the big reason for the third shift was to add capacity for the Austrailian and New Zealand market. It really had nothing to do with US demand from what I was told.

Last year Freightliner at the time of the expansion offered only two models over there, the conventional Columbia and cab over Argosy (which has not been built for US use for quite a while).

Only offered one powertrain, a 60 series Detroit and an Autoshift Roadranger (I feel that does away with clutch pedal issues for RH drive trucks).

Now see what they are offering over there (or under there)... ... .

Now this is all speculation on my part, an attempt at filling a post while waiting for the computer to finish generating my stock orders.....

Reading up on the current Aussie offerings I will throw this out.

The DD series and mid-range Cummins are the offerings now, but still sticking with the Autoshift.

The Columbia is on borrowed time, the Argosy has been gone here in the USA for several years.

They appear to have added the Coronado line which is produced and assembled in Mexico. The Coronado SD was designed for only the new DD series engines and where the Series 60 has all but disappeared from the world on-highway market due to global clean air regs it would only make sense to add that model (Coronado) to the Aussie market.

They are not going to keep updating the Columbia's wiring, it is not worth it after a certain point. When the Glider market shifts from '98 emissions to '04 emissions I think that the Columbia and Century Models will be pulled. To keep updating the Columbia family wiring for the DD series engines will be pointless after a fashion.

They may have to keep the Argosy, there has got to be some serious demand for a cabover for it to be in production right now simply for the export only market.

I don't think the other two shifts at the Cleveland plant need to worry, the main product there is the Cascadia model. It is being embraced by fleets and O/O's alike. That is the model of truck that I drove back from New Mexico two years ago and I will tell you that it is a nice, driver friendly piece of equipment.

I could be wrong about the above content, but I think I am dead on with at least some of it... ... ;)
